Ewloe Castle is a fascinating and atmospheric ruin tucked away in the heart of Wepre Park. Unlike many castles in North Wales, this one was built by the Welsh princes — probably by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in the 13th century — rather than by the English crown. Its history makes it a rare example of native Welsh castle design, and the distinctive D-shaped tower still stands proudly among the trees. The setting is unusual and enchanting, as the castle lies deep within the forest and is reached by a lovely walk through woodland paths. You can also take a path and walk by the nearby river at the feet of the ruins. Entry is completely free, and you can climb part of the tower for views over the site. The area has a calm, almost hidden charm, perfect for a peaceful walk or a bit of historical exploration. Do note that after rain the ground can become quite muddy and slippery in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended.

Caught this by accident on our way out of Wales, the castle is like an abandoned landmark, hidden in a forest, Google maps took up up the wrong road, there's no parking, you basically have to park in a lay-by and walk about 100yrd but worth it for a silent isolated bit of history

**Access to castle is free!** A terrific find in a delightful valley of trees and river. The castle is well hidden until it rears up out of the trees. Ewloe Castle combines features from both motte-and-bailey and enclosure castles. An asymmetrical curtain wall—with parapets—encloses two courtyards. No idea why the site was chosen as it is overlooked by surrounding fields. Car park in Wepre Park. Footpaths are wide, well made and provide good access. Last part up to the castle can be slippery. Highly recommended to visit.

We went on a soggy day when proper walking boots should have been worn.... the mud was slippy, deep and squelchy. Includes a children's playground, picnic area, cafe and toilet facilities. Located within Wepre Park towards the southern end and atop the hill is the ruins of Ewloe Castle. It is free to enter and despite only being ruins, there are a set of steps leading up one of the towers which provides a great view of the castle below and the wider area.

Amazing little castle, with lots of history to go with it. Great spot for a picnic and some pictures too. There are lots of paths through the surrounding woodland, I recommend taking a trail or two as it’s a beautiful woodland. There is a wetland are and a river too, a great walk along a boardwalk so you and the little ones can see down and look for frogs and lizards.
