Something for everyone here, a really delightful shop. An amazing stock of goods from home cured bacon to sweet figs. I always come away with new delicacies
What a gem of a shop, lovely staff, Fresh, ripe lovely produce. Knowledgeable owners, a total credit to the community. I used them 35 years ago, recently came back to thornbury, they are still as good.
This place is unbelievable, just go there. It has everything. Things you thought were no longer things. Blancmange is still a thing. The prices are very good. Probably going to be my go to cheese shop from now on. THEY HAD REFRESHERS, not after I left. If you are in Thornbury and don't go here you have wasted your journey. Update: Google has just asked me if this place has changed. No we have just got better at spotting the wonderful range of items this shop stocks. Update: they have ham, not just any ham but the best ham I have tasted in years. Another update: Bought some bacon yesterday (along with a load of cheese and ham) and had a bacon sandwich for lunch. Unbelievably good bacon, the amount of shopping I do here is just going to increase.
I have been into Mr Riddifords shop several times now sinse moving to the local area, its an aladind cave of variety . . .(I shop there particularly for the extra strong cheese that he stocks) but he has such a wide range and his home cooked food and quiches are amazing, definitely my favourite shop on the Thornbury High St. Mark, Alveston
Super friendly old-fashioned small grocery shop, which sells practivally everything you need to eat like royalty but at ordinary people prices. If there is some product which you find difficult to obtain elsewhere (recentish example for us is blancmange powder), try Riddifords 9 times out of 10 they'll have it. This time I bought some beautiful double Gloucester cheese which being called double Berkeley is produced by the cheesemakers who revived the style some 50 years ago before it slip into obscurity. It is really lovely, and there's no better place to buy it. The shop was the inspiration for Ronnie Barker's original Open all Hours sitcom. He encountered it when filming some of the allotment based sketches for the Two Ronnie's programme, with his old friend Ronnie Corbett. The Thornbury allotments were believed to be the quintessential archetype of that peculiarly British gardening phenomenon, hence their featuring in the show. Many years ago, back in the 1930s, my dad worked in the shop and had the special job of looking after the owners' hens. You can not imagine selling fresher eggs than those birds must have produced.
This place is traditional, I get milk in a glass bottle and local stuff and I think it's great.
This shop is incredible. It had the most amazing selection of gorgeous food, literally everything. They need a bigger shop in which to fit such a huge selection! Lovely staff too.
Step into the best grocers in the West Country! Unbelievable variety & service. This is the shop that inspired "Open All Hours" You will love this shop and in so doing experience how shops were and the service they provide. Love this place!
An Aladdin's cave of grocery delights at the top of the High Street - almost everything you can think of, from fresh often local fruit, veg and dairy products, cakes and bread, to preserves, sweets and treats, dried fruits, spices, tinned goods, ice cream. All reasonably priced with friendly service and local delivery available. They also sell garden furniture, planters, bird food and other seasonal items. If there's something you need try there first!
