As a patron of this establishment for over 4 decades I thought I’d visit under the new ownership since being taken over some months ago. For purposes of historical fact, under the name Vivek and Spicy Haandi this curry house had to be one of the most rated places to eat of which I can vouch for due to living locally. The restaurant has had a sympathetic makeover which was pleasing as it did look tired before the new owners took over. The menu had obviously changed its style of cooking to Nepalese of which I was interested to try. Myself and my fellow diners were very pleased with the friendliness of the waitress, she was polite and upon enquiry, explained the meaning of the name of the restaurant which is unusual using numbers but it all made sense upon explanation. Food was served in a prompt manner which was on the whole tasty and flavourful however upon sampling one of my fellow diners King Prawn Tikka Masala I was surprised not only to find that the King Prawns were not β€˜king’ in size but also profoundly overcooked, they were hard and difficult to chew. This was very disappointing given that for many years previously, king prawn dishes were consistently excellent and on vary rare occasions did I have to highlight the overcooking of this admittedly not easy to get perfectly correct protein. The point of this comment is relative to the fact that the price of this dish has increased by 30% under the new ownership and I would expect much better than what was served. Other points to note are that some photos do not represent the restaurant on the website and that although only being open a few months, reviews date back years of which is confusing and potentially misleading to those who have like myself who have used the restaurant for so very long. Sadly after 42 years I will not return to an establishment that I had such a fond relationship with.

Gurkha 8848 is one of the best Indian & Nepali restaurant I have tasted in Leicester city and very close by both stadium. Owner and people here are so down to earth and kind. Special thanks to Anu for suggesting special dish and drinks. Finger licking tasty food. Enjoy Indian and Nepali music. Special offers for students. Low price, heavy quantity.

I visited Gorkha 8848 last week with friends, and the experience was truly memorable. From start to finish, everything about the evening was excellent. The restaurant has a warm, inviting ambiance β€” soft lighting, tasteful dΓ©cor, and comfortable seating that immediately makes you feel relaxed. The staff were friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu β€” they helped us choose dishes that matched our preferences and were always nearby without being intrusive. We started with momos and popadoms with colorful dips, which were beautifully presented and a great introduction to the meal. For mains, I tried their Bhutuwa curry and Lamb Tikka Masala. The spices were perfectly balanced β€” bold but never overwhelming, and the meat was tender and cooked just right. The portion sizes were generous, and every dish had fresh, vibrant flavors. The highlight was how the service elevated the meal: our server checked in at the perfect times, offered to explain unfamiliar items, and even offered to take a group photo for us β€” small touches that made a big difference. In terms of value, I felt the food and experience were very reasonably priced given the quality. We left feeling satisfied, impressed, and eager to return. If you’re in Leicester (or nearby) and craving Nepalese / Indian / Indo-Chinese cuisine done well, Gorkha 8848 is definitely worth a visit.

An excellent meal, perfectly cooked and served in a timely manner considering 8 tables all filled up at 7pm on a Saturday night. Those who work in or have worked in the catering trade will understand that this can cause an issue in taking orders for drinks and food, never mind preparing it. Our experience was A1 first class. Good, flavourful food takes time and boy is it worth it! This place served us great food in a timely manner with Jeff and his team, short handed though they were, being first class in their approach. 10/10 for me. Would recommend the butter lamb main and the chicken 65 as a starter if you like a bit of fiery heat.

Fantastic restaurant! The food was delicious but the service is what I’ll remember most. We were struggling with a selfie our server (Joel) happily offered to be our photographer, it’s those little things that make a great night out. Can’t wait to return

God knows whats happened to this place. Ordered biriyani and got pilau rice with a few bits of veg in, no flavour at all, a pasanda which was more like a curry you get at school tasted and looked nothing like pasanda and a shami kebab which was rock hard and cold? The fire paneer was nice and so was the mango lassi which is the only reason for the 2 star. dunno if you have got new chefs but they need sorting out cos that was bad

Went out for a midweek meal here and it did not disappoint. The menu selection was great, staff were really helpful and pointed us in the right direction for cuisine we hadn’t tried before. Really great value for money, as the dishes were substantial portion sizes for the price. Will be recommending this place to family and friends.

Shameful... Ordered a takeaway before deciding whether or not to dine in the restaurant on our date night. Wouldn't recommend to my cat. Onion bhaji starter... a bit like an armadillo. Burnt on the outside and very under on the inside. Chicken tikka masala was like water. No flavour other than salt... very salty. The chutney tray... all I can say is woeful. Example is colmans mint sauce mixed with yoghurt. Poppadoms not bad but for a Β£40 meal in total (even after sending out another batch) is not good value for money. The beer is mediocre but as they didn't brew this Ghurka beer, cannot take credit for the best bit. I guess date night will have to be rethought.
