My dad and I visited this Cadwaladers yesterday (30th March 2024) while we visited Barry Island. I chose to have ice-cream from there because I saw on their website that there were gluten-free cones available while my dad chose to have ice-cream from there because he thought the atmosphere looked quiet for a Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival, the server probably told us we needed to queue up if we wanted to order food other than ice-cream. Because my dad and I were only buying ice-creams, we just waited where the ice-creams were. I was impressed with the wide selection of flavours, but I was even more impressed when I saw that there were dairy-free ice-creams and sorbets available, especially if I avoid dairy where I can besides being gluten-free. My dad had an ordinary waffle cone with mint chocolate chip and raspberry ripple ice-creams while I had a gluten-free cone with dairy-free vanilla and chocolate ice-creams and an extra scoop I didn’t ask for, which I initially was butterscotch flavoured and I didn’t know was dairy-free or not. Upon looking at one of my photos of the flavours, I saw that my extra scoop was dairy-free salted caramel. Even though I don’t usually like salted caramel, I couldn’t really taste any salt in it. Although the double cones were £4.00 each, we both enjoyed our ice-creams very much. In terms of service, my dad and I waited a little while to be served. When the server took our order, she asked if we had any allergies. I told her I was gluten-free, but she didn’t quite hear what I said, so my dad reiterated my request for her. Despite the server’s initial misunderstanding of my simple gluten-free request, she was more attentive when I ordered the gluten-free cone and told her what ice-cream flavours I wanted. I loved how the gluten-free cones were kept separately from the ordinary ones and how the server used a separate scoop for the non-dairy ice-creams. One thing to note is that Cadwaladers in Barry Island only accepts card payments. All in all, despite the initial misunderstanding of my gluten-free request, the somewhat slow service to begin with and the uncertainty of my extra scoop, my dad and I enjoyed our overall experience at Cadwaladers, Barry Island. I might visit again in the future. 4/5.
