The service is well-organized and makes for an unconventional half-day trip. You have the odd contrast of the white-knuckle buckaroo ride of the speedboat (definitely bring a waterproof jacket with hood, and definitely don't go if you have spinal issues or can't grip handlebars) and the slow-paced walk around Flat Holm. On our trip, there was a tour guide; I don't know if a guide is present on every trip. You can either follow the guide or walk around at your own leisure. There is just enough to see in the given time, especially if you pause a lot to take photos. Youngsters might not find the island particularly stimulating unless they're enthusiastic about searching for the remains of wartime gun posts. There is one loo and a place to buy tea and coffee (bringing your own food and drink is fine). Bring walking boots, as the terrain is uneven with spiky grass stumps, as well as a hat and gloves--the Bristol Channel can bring in a strong chill factor.

We used bay island voyages for our trip to steep holm. The boats are fantastic and modern. They had a very professional crew and friendly. Enjoyed the trip as much as the island. I would definately book another trip with these guys.Collected and returned us from Weston Super Mare.

Great fun! Took my kid (9) down the bay this morning for his birthday and decided to give the 15-minute speed boat trip ago. We had an amazing time! The girls taking the booking were great, and Baz who drove the boat was brilliant. Even when banking and going over waves, we felt completely secure and loved the entire ride. 100% recommend!!!

Had an amazing coastal trip for my daughters 11th birthday with 11 of her friends. All 12 kids smiling and loving the ride and the informative talks from our Captain Ed. Safe, fun and great value for money!! Will definitely use again.

My husband and I went on the 15 minute bay voyage yesterday, having never been on a speed boat before. Bay Island provides life jackets in the event of an emergency and give a safety briefing before setting off, so we felt we were in safe hands. The boat is fitted with padded benches, which you sit on as if riding a horse, and there are bars in front of each seat to hold on to. The driver also makes sure the passengers are ok during the journey. The trip was exhilarating and I finished the ride with my hair looking as if I’d been dragged through a hedge backwards. We did get off the boat with smiles on our faces, as promised, and I would happily recommend.

Decided to book the Flat Holm trip after always looking at the island from Cardiff and wondering what it was like on there. We were met at Mermaid Quay by Rosie and Sean who were very welcoming, friendly and made you feel at ease. They helped with our life jackets, explained all the safety procedures with a bit of humour thrown in and were great throughout. The island was very interesting, the wardens/volunteers welcomed us from the boat explained what to expect, where everything was etc and we were left to either explore ourselves or take the guided tour. Back in the bay after going through the barrage locks, Sean gave us a quick demo of the boats capabilities which was great fun for everyone, himself and Rosie even got us to sing happy birthday for a lady whos birthday it was on board. Great day out, great trip to Flat Holm and would definitely do it again.

What a wonderful day out! As tempting as it was to roll back to sleep when the alarm went off at 05:30 to be at the causeway for 06:15, I'm so glad I didn't! The sunrise was beautiful, the team were warm and funny, and made everybody feel at ease with one another. There were nice little touches such as the playing of the Jurassic Park theme tune as we approached Steep Holm and all of its majestic beautiful, and generally being there to answer any questions about the island that people had. I was worried that twelve hours on the island was going to drag, but it was a surprisingly beautiful opportunity to slow down and enjoy the numerous trails taking in the history and natural beauty of Steep Holm. If I lived closer, I could certainly see myself becoming a volunteer there! Thank you for a fabulous day!

An absolutely brilliant experience!! £12 per person and worth every penny! It's exhilarating, but also relaxing in parts and allows you to view Cardiff Bay/Atlantic Wharf/Penarth from a different and stunning angle. I took my 9 year old cousin on it and she had the time of her life singing along to 'Danger zone' whilst riding the waves! I live in Cardiff and will be strongly recommending this to anyone that visits, even if it's just to go back on it myself!
