Thoroughly enjoyed food and drink at this establishment a few days ago. Great range of pies with choice of sides. Food tasted great and ample portions. Lovely, efficient staff.
Travelled up from Birmingham to come to the Red Lion for a pie. What a place. Was not disappointed. Incredible pub. Super friendly staff. Erin served us and she was so professional and attentive and friendly. The food was outstanding. Literally outstanding. If you’re considering it you should just book a table and get there. There is a crazy pie menu but loads of other food options as well including vegan. Great for motorbikes too. The owner also offered the kids at other tables a dice game where they get a prize for specific numbers. If you roll a six you get 10% off the bill!!
Booked online and was able to make a slight change to the time of our booking as well, so that was a good start. On arrival the staff consisted of one young lady doing absolutely everything, well, other than cooking, and she was great (though could probably use a hand in order to keep things moving at times). Got our drinks, sat down and started thinking about our pie options. Very helpfully, the young lady came to let us know that there was a group of about 9 coming in at any moment, so best to order soon if we didn't want a delay. So we made our choices, and I have to say as someone who doesn't normally eat pie, this was amazing and I had zero regrets! Pastry was not stodgy or thick, but crisp where it needed to be, held up to the generous amount of beef inside and being doused in gravy on the outside. My son's mac and cheese looked really good too. Desserts were huge, we couldn't finish them. My only quibble is that I couldn't really taste much red wine in my red wine gravy, and one of the ice creams from the 'ice cream trio' was vanilla rather than the advertised chocolate, although it had no vanilla flavour either. But we would definitely return if in the area and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a delicious dinner, friendly service, and lovely views.

Reading the earlier reviews I think we had an unlucky experience. We had two pies, gammon and chips and a pizza. The latter two were spot on. Tasty home cooked chips, that's always a winner. But the pies, the reason for visiting, were disappointing. The pies themselves were very tasty. But they were served sitting in the gravy which surprised us. I'd have expected it to be in a jug. Both the chicken and the mint gravy were very watery and they made the pastry so soggy that they ruined the pie. I ended up putting the pie on a side plate to eat it. So pies good, cauliflower cheese good, chips good, gravy ruined it all! It's a dog friendly pub and as a dog owner that didn't bother me. The party near us had three very well behaved dogs but the second party brought in a dog that constantly barked. It made it very uncomfortable and conversation difficult. If your dog can't behave don't bring it to dinner!
The food and service here is excellent. The pies are absolutely delicious, and the homemade mash equally so.
Ne er knew this place existed till someone told us about it. It's a little gem of a place, they do a selection of pies and potato options. My steak and kidney was gorgeous with homemade chips and gravy. I was annoyed I didn't spot the cauliflower cheese till afterwards. My pedigree was top drawer. If your in the area give it a try.
