NOT RECOMMENDED. Worst pub experience I ever had, I think. I was there with my friend this afternoon (16th) for a couple of hours. When we went in, there was nobody in the first part of the pub (bar area) to even greet us, whatsoever. When got to the second part of the pub at the back , there were I think 3 young men behind the counter not doing much but again, none of them came to greet us. So, we went up to them to ask if they do lunch, they said yes, menu is on the table, so after deciding what to have, we went up to the counter to order. Those young lads had no smile, no enthusiasm, nothing. Ok, and food? A bit of chicken with melted cheese on top, then a bit of bacon on top of it with tiny fried tomato, peas and chips. That, with diet coke, it was nearly 17 pounds. While we were eating , guys were standing behind the counter talking to themselves , didn't even BOTHERED to ask us if everything was ok. Oh and some of the seats were very dirty! I mean, DIRTY. This pub also had the dirtiest toilet I've seen in pub. And there was only one working toilet (ladies'). I don't recommend the place, and I'll never go there, again. I told my friend who gave them a tip (only because it is Christmas!) she shouldn't have.

Went in to the monks retreat. They very kindly put the football for us and sorted us a table. Exemplary service from Zach, Niamh and Gabriel. Credit to the company - should be proud to have them working for you

The Monks Retreat is a lively spot that’s great for a casual drink or a meal with friends. The atmosphere is welcoming with plenty of seating and a good mix of locals and visitors. Drinks are well priced with a wide range of beers, ciders and spirits, and the food menu covers all the pub classics at decent value. Service is friendly and quick even when it gets busy, and the overall vibe makes it an easy place to relax for a couple of hours.

Very quiet when we went in (about 8:30 pm on a Wednesday), but friendly staff and a good range of beers. There was footie on TV but it wasn't overly loud so you could still have a conversation. Will visit again next time I overnight in Reading.

Food service was slow the lasagna was swimming in sauce like soup the burger was tinny the chips where half cooked and you could count on one hand the amount of chips you got and menu said premium drinks festive burger £10.29 then the barman said they put their prices up so the menu said the wrong price. I will never go there again needless to say I got a full refund

England v Iran Booked a table, which was easy to do on line, watched the game there. I’ve been drinking at that pub for years. The current manager, tall dude with beard, has the place in order. No daytime drunks, the bar team all working together and polite and helpful to all, a good atmosphere…….. excellent experience. Nice one Monks. I’m deffo booking again.

This is an ideal place to be if one is sports-minded and enjoys watching a match on the telly. There are many screens in this place, so one is not likely to miss a goal or a try. If one wants a more quie, atmosphere, the area downstairs was less crowded. I don't know if this is always the case. The burger choices are really nice. I decided to try the vegan burger and it was really nice. I recommend the vegan burger and I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The members of staff who took our order was really friendly and enthusiastic. He stated that he had only started to work there, but he appeared to be extremely confident and knew the menu. One has to order upstairs and there was not an overly long wait for the food to arrive.
