There was a lot of walking around to the amphitheatre and the chapel, but it was nice to see the amphitheatre ruins. At least the walk was next to the walls. If you look at the fields with Google maps satellite mode, you can see the old straight roads of the town.

Visitors can walk along and beside the Roman walls of Calleva and into it's amphitheatre. Great fun for an ancient history nerd but surely impressive for anyone who wants to imagine life in Roman Britain 2000yrs ago. Wear good shoes or trainers. Calleva was big so a stroll around the circuit can take an hour...or more. Free car park and free entry.

Had a really lovely walk around the walls of this old roman town. Beware that there isn't much left to see but there are lots of signs with information about what would've been there in the past. I have been to Reading Museum several times and seen their Silchester Gallery so it was nice to visit the site where they discovered all these artefacts from the Roman era. There is a lovely church and the ruins of the amphitheatre as well.

Wonderful! I love the Roman epoque. I didn't find the car park proper til nearing the end of the visit to Silchester. Large, purpose built car park for the Roman town, with substantial information boards. You can walk the extent of the walls surrounding where the Roman town used to be sited. They are ruins but in places you can walk along the top. Plentiful abundance of fascinating information boards along the way. You get to see the key points such as the North and the South Gates. I walked around and also past the church. The walls are most impressive around the South Gate. Here they stand maybe three people high. Yes, you can walk along the top here, but then you miss the detailing and skill involved in the flint masonry itself. The alternatively diagonally slanting strata of stone layer upon layer.... I just get a big beaming smile of childlike pleasure when I think the Romans built this. It's fab and always somewhat wondrous to me. Very, very interesting.

We had a really enjoyable walk around the walls of the old Roman town of Silchester. The walk is probably about 2.5km long and will take you about an hour to complete. The walls are fairly complete at the southern end where they reach around 20ft high but in other places are much lower. The site has a good number of information boards explaining the history. There is no entry fee and the car park is free (but I did see a notice from the council proposing to charge £1.20 for 2 hours)

Fantastic place to visit! Steeped in history and well preserved, informative and great for walkers and dog walkers and taking your younger family to teach them about the Roman's it was a great experience. The Amphitheater was incredible you could feel the history there knowing it was for entertainment but very brutal for hundreds of years!

I expected something more from an English Heritage site. 30-40’ walk with just a few remains to be seen.

Very pleasant walk - ampitheatre site impressive and identification of north and south gate and plenty of wall makes this a trip for the imagination - good areas of shade over the 2km if happens to be a really sunny day.

my expectations were different- i expected ruins of the town. there are really just defence walls, and ruins of gates, nothing else. the ruins were converted into pasture for sheep. such a shame. i took one video from the ancient ditch. the ditch is not marked.

I enjoyed (albeit typical British spring weather) a walk around the Silchester Roman walls. Quite a short, but very interesting walk nonetheless. Depending on your pace, it takes approximately 30-35 minutes to complete, which gives you a good idea on the size of the Roman town. The walls (or part of them are really what remains of this once ancient piece of history). You can also see the beautiful 12th century church, which sits to the south side of the Roman town. So, I would recommend this walk to anyone. Please ensure to keep your kids on a close eye around some of the wall embankments.
