This is the first negative review I've written. My wife and I bought take away fish and 2 portions of chips yesterday afternoon. The lady at the counter had no interpersonal skills at all. No friendly welcome, a very rude manner (despite me being friendly and smiling) and was wearing a dirty stained company sweatshirt. Polite and friendly manners do not cost money. There was no reason why she should be wearing a previously stained and dirty sweatshirt. After feeling uncomfortable and raging at her dismissive and rude manner we were given a piece of fish that was clearly prepared a long time before. As you can see from the photo the batter was more of a thick soup with no crisp whatsoever. (My wife and I shared the fish). To top it all, the chips were under cooked. We walked to our car in the carpark opposite to eat the fish and chips, the food quality would not have degraded that quickly. Had it not been for the storm we would have returned the trays and politely asked for a refund. I would like to strongly suggest that the lady is given some basic customer service training and that the food is checked for how long it is left before being sold. The shop had 3 customers in and we saw several new customers entering the shop both before and after we bought our fish and chips. So maybe, the fish wasn't cooked properly? If management/owners see this review as a reminder to set higher standards in the shop then only good can come if it. In terms of our food experience, it was in no doubt the worst fish and chips and customer service we have encountered. Sadly, we put the food in a bin.

The best fish and chips in Hayling Island and the prices do reflect this. There is often a queue outside during peak times however we are always served quickly. Extra sauces are 50p, drinks average around £2 so for 2 fish and chips meals plus a saveloy, the cost was £30. I don't often eat fish and chips unless by the sea and therefore cannot be certain this is the going rate. That aside, the food quality is great and given that most people by the sea are eating here (the bins are also always full with Coastguards bags) it does reflect well. We visit Hayling Island regularly during peak season and will always come here before heading home, despite not always being hungry.

We bought takeaway fish and chips and chips, curry sauce and a pea fritter to eat on the beach. There was a ten minute wait for the pea fritter but it wasn’t busy so it didn’t matter. Service was just the basic, how can I help? Salt and vinegar. Nothing to rave about but acceptable. The pea fritter was a bit of a let down after waiting for it. Not much in the way of batter and the batter that was there was soggy.

The Coastguard Cafe has a small indoor seated area as well as a separate entrance for takeaway orders. The takeaway queue was fairly large but there were a few tables available inside. I was disappointed that they no longer offer the vegan 'fish' but I tried a pea fritter and a sausage which were both vegan friendly. Food tasted good and was good value.

So good we ate here twice in the same day! We always come here whenever we come to Hayling for an impromptu day out. We arrived just after opening on Sunday, and was in and out nice and quickly. Chips were beautiful, battered sausages lovely and crunchy and a great amount of salt and vinegar! A rarity for a chippy! We were very happy eating it while watching the sea. After our day exploring the beaches we decided to get the same meal again to complete the day. Again brilliantly cooked and no complaints from our picky kids. Thank you very much :)

So lovely to see vegan food on the menu. I had the vegan fishless fish, chips, mushy peas & salad, really tasty, hot & filling. The manageress was really friendly & helpful with the food options. Thank you for catering for vegetarian/vegans.

We popped in on a Sunday afternoon. Really attentive service and super efficient too, plus really reasonably priced. I had a battered sausage and chips, which was super tasty and we sat and enjoyed the view. What more can you ask for?! Perfect pit stop for families with little ones waiting to take the train back to the funfair!

Tried the cod an chips as told best on Island .... too be honest. Fish was good but chips a little soggy. We did not eat at particularly busy time so may have made a difference. But generally all good. Nice clean place with happy to help staff.

My wife and I stopped here for lunch after a walk along the beach. A lovely welcome from the waitress, we were seated and ordered our food and drink. We both had cod and chips, and both of us commented on how lovely the food was. The chips were crisp without being dry, the fish was cooked perfectly with the batter being really light. I can also recommend the strawberry milkshake.
