   A Review of Unacceptable Service: My Experience at B&M A review should serve as a fair and honest account of an experience, guiding future customers and, ideally, prompting reflection from the business itself. It is therefore with genuine disappointment that I feel compelled to detail the profoundly unsatisfactory and discourteous service I recently encountered at my local B&M store, an experience which fell drastically short of reasonable expectations. The incident occurred at 8:55pm, a mere five minutes before the store’s official closing time. Like any customer at that hour, I was aware of the time and was making a conscious effort to be swift, hurrying to the entrance to make a last-minute essential purchase. What transpired next, however, was an act of such deliberate incivility that it has permanently marred my perception of this retailer. As I approached, a member of staff made direct eye contact, acknowledged my presence, and then proceeded to slam the glass door shut. He did not allow the automatic mechanism to close it gently; instead, he took physical action to ensure it closed abruptly. To compound this unprofessionalism, he then produced a key and locked the door directly in front of me, a gesture that felt both dismissive and intentionally exclusionary. From a legal and ethical standpoint, a store’s advertised trading hours represent a contract with the consumer. To actively refuse entry to a customer at 8:55pm, when the closing time is publicly stated as 9:00pm, is not merely poor customer service—it is a fundamental breach of that understanding. The staff member’s actions communicated a clear message: their personal desire to finish early was of greater importance than upholding the store’s commitments to its customers. Consequently, I cannot in good conscience recommend this particular B&M branch. While every retail establishment deserves efficient closure procedures, these should never come at the expense of basic courtesy and professionalism. The brazen nature of this incident suggests a culture where such behaviour is permitted, if not implicitly encouraged. For anyone considering a visit, I would strongly advise taking your custom elsewhere, to a retailer that values your patronage and respects the principles of good service. This was, without hyperbole, the most negative retail experience I have ever endured.

   A Grievance Most Bitter, Spoke of the Trader "B & M" 12/11/2025 Hark, lend thine ear to a tale of woe and discourtesy most rank, that ye may be forewarned of the churlish spirits that haunt the establishment known to all as the shop of B & M. It was upon the eve, the clock's hand nigh upon the ninth hour, when the closing of the market-stalls is decreed by the council's bell. Yet, the bell had not toll'd! Knowing this, I did make haste, my breath short, my purpose fixed upon a small procurement for the morrow's feast. As I did approach the timber'd door of the merchant, I beheld a knave, a base varlet in the employ of the house. Our eyes did meet, and in his, I saw a malice petty and cold. With a leg most ungainly, he thrust himself to the door, and I, with hope yet in my breast, did quicken my step. But lo! Ere I could cross the threshold, the churl did slam the oaken door with a violence that shook the very frame! He stayed not for the latch to find its home, but with a key, large and iron, he did lock it fast, e'en as I stood a mere hand's-breadth from the glass. "Good sir!" I did cry, my voice a mixture of astonishment and heat. "The sun is not fully fled! The bell hath not sounded the hour of nine! By law and custom, entry is my right!" The fellow, this canker-blossom of a man, did turn his back, making answer with a gesture most rude, and vanished into the gloom of his shop, leaving me in the street, my errand undone and my humour most sourly tested. O, what a pestilent heart doth beat in such a breast! This B & M, which doth present a fair front to the world, is in its practice false. It is a nest of adders, and its servants are of the same low character. Let this be a warning to all good folk of the borough: shun this place. Let thy custom go to the honest tradesman who knows the value of a promise and the meaning of the clock. A pox on all their house! For if a star I could give, it would be less than naught; a void, a darkness, a most profound and resounding zero.

   I don't know why I've not left a review for this store before. The Newport store is always well stocked and tidy. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, they actually take you to the item you are looking for, most times, not just point. There always seem to be extra offers on too. The tills are usually all open as well during busy times. I will definitely still be using this 'discount' store.

   Some good items here, can park behind the store, you need to get a ticket even though parking is free, 2 hrs max parking. No toilets in store, but public toilets are in carpark, helpful staff.

   Very handy store to have in town. Prices are right. Very useful shop for general everyday food, toiletries,stationary etc. Very pleasant, helpful staff. Shelves are always well stocked. Steer clear of school times if possible.
