We met up with a couple of friends for a first visit to the Townsend Restaurant which is located in the Whitechapel Gallery in east london. It turned out to be a very nice lunch with good food and excellent service from Niki. The menu is a mix small and large plateβs designed for sharing. It also gives you the flexibility for instance if you just want a couple of dishes each thatβs absolutely fine. You can spend as little or as much time here as you want. The four of us basically decided to order 99.999% of the menu meaning that it was just the oysters and the cheese were the only items we didnβt choose. Our host Niki said she would arrange to stagger the food so that all the plates did not come out together. Listed below was yesterdayβs menu. SMALL PLATES / LARGE PLATES Bread and whipped glastonbury butter Cornish yarg fritter, apple ketchup (pic.1) Whipped cods roe, Townsend cracker and beetroot (pic.2) Nutbourne tomatoes, vegan ricotta and black garlic (pic.3) Crab with fine green beans and marketmore cucumber (pic.4) Charred hispi cabbage, romesco, onion bhaji, coconut mint yogurt (pic.5) Lamb breast, slipcote, red currants and rainbow chard (pic.6) Rainbow trout, berkswell, courgette, pine nuts and pickled sea herbs (pic.7) SIDES Jersey mids, garlic and parsley, olive oil, garlic mayonnaise Watercress and red oak salad DESSERTS Chocolate torte, cherries (pic.8) Lemon tart, Northiam farm creme fraiche (pic.9) English strawberries, Yoghurt parfait with lemon thyme (pic.10) The food was delicious , the service was very friendly and there was a lovely casual and relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely recommend popping in especially if youβre paying a visit to the gallery located in the same building. Thank You to all the team for a lovely afternoon.

I have to be frank, I'm pretty disappointed with this meal. My friend and I had bought a ticket to an exhibition and 2 course lunch at this restaurant, and sadly the menu was set to 2 options of mains. Either fish or pork (I don't eat pork). My friend is also vegetarian, so her dish was not available to see on the menu. In hindsight we should have checked what was on the menu before booking, but I guess we learnt from our mistake! The food was nice, but at best tasting menu size portions. Which left us feeling hungry at the end (so yes we ended up going somewhere to eat after the exhibition). The atmosphere was calm and sophisticated and the service was excellent, so definitely can't fault that. I'm sure the food would have been better from the a la carte menu so I wouldn't deter you. Also when you buy the ticket with lunch, there is nowhere that informs you that you need to also book the restaurant separately. Thankfully the restaurant was not busy. But that would have been useful to know beforehand.

We absolutely loved the vibe in here, the music was spectacular and the service very lovely. The food was great, we ordered several starters, one main course and dessert. Croquettes, crab toast, duck, fries and dark chocolate and pistachios with mandarine cake. They offer very good quality coffee from La Marzzoco coffee machines. The portions are small for the price, but itβs definitely worth it.

visited this restaurant for the first time and ordered the pre-dinner bread and the three course lunch set menu. I felt that they were all high-quality dishes. Staff were friendly. It would be nice to look around the bookstore and gallery together after dinner. RATINGS Food : 4/5 Service. : 3/5 Value : 3/5 Atmosphere : 4/5

Lovely restaurant and comfy environment. Staffs are friendly The food is okay but not impressed. My friend said that she felt the trout dish is something she can make at home The dessert is okay but not necessarily to have Expresso martini is great though. Had many in the past and this one is surprisingly one of the best

Nice location inside a museum. Delicious food with a good quality-price ratio, portion in line with a high rates restaurant. The 2/3 courses menu is a very good deal, wine list really good and wide. I would recommend the dessert (fig leaf cream with poached raspberries and almond biscuits) and the asparagus and pea tart.

Easy to miss spot as it is nestled in Whitechapel Gallery; but what a treat when you do discover it. My wife and I went for the tasting menu, which consists of four courses. Seasonal ingredients were used and flavours were light and refreshing. Service was excellent and our host was most delightful.

Completely unplanned dinner out, but what a superb restaurant to have it in, with incredibly friendly service. Only part of the restaurant was open, but only 3 tables were in use. We'd previously had one of their at-home dinners, which we'd enjoyed. The menu is short but varied, with plates of various sizes to pick from. We shared a small, a medium, and had a large each, which was plenty. The dessert wasn't needed but was delicious. The wines we had all went great with the food. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will keep this hidden gem in mind for the future.
