I made an offer for a Boxford CNC machine on eBay which the owner accepted, but the transaction occurred off eBay, however, I felt that they looked a reasonable and established business, so I went along with it. The machine was described as fully functional and so I didn't expect any issues. The first issue was that the Y axis kept "stalling". It appeared to have no torque, even with no work-piece fitted (in manual mode). I contacted them and let them know the problem. I then spent a considerable amount of my time cleaning the bearing rails and lead screws. Eventually this seemed to do the trick and I let them know it seemed ok, although I hadn't machined anything at this point. The next problem came when I wanted to connect the machine to the PC. It simply would not connect and I spent many hours messing around with it and getting nowhere. Eventually I contacted Boxford and they said it might be the cable. Ostia tools decided to send me a cheap off the shelf item which was not the original one or the one shown in the listing photographs. I was therefore never going get a connection with the cable provided. Boxford provided me with the pin assignments for the cable and I made my own one which immediately resolved the issue. After this I have had a number of issues with irregular errors, E-stop problems, some of which may be software related and some hardware, I have yet to find out. I rang the company and explained my position and the owner said he would give me something back as I was likely to convert the machine to Mach3. That offer evaporated over the weekend and I was told I would get nothing. It seems there is no benefit in going to a so called business to buy something. There is no protection and I will never buy outside of eBay again.

I purchased a Boxford AUD lathe earlier this year. It proved to be in first class condition and i am delighted with its performance. When I visited Ostia tools to view this lathe there was a Harrison 600 milling machine sat on a pallet nearby, naturally this caught my attention... and like a kid in a sweetshop I ended up buying that too. (Whether this is a recognised 'Ostia tools' sales ploy I have no idea, but it worked and I am extremely happy with my purchases). Aftersales support is spot on and I will certainly buy my future machines from this company.

Place for old, quality machines to get a new lease of life. Really well refurbished, all. An Alladin's cave for metalworkers. Prices reflect the amount of labour that takes. Will be back.

We have purchased several items over the last 3 years . I have recently had my Myford lathe updated , new motor and Newton Tesla control box as well as a strip down and refurb . From start to Finnish Anthony has been exceptional in his approach to our requirements and his ability to more than meet our expectations . And advise when necessary. Highly recommended

Antony is the most decent sales rep I’ve dealt with in a long time! I put a large order in which involves significant logistics and then had to put it on hold on the morning of shipping. He didn’t make even the slightest issue and carried on supporting us! Many thanks D Roberts

We sold my fathers workshop tools to these guys. They gave us a fair price for all the equipment, most of which I had no idea what it was. They paid us before removing all the contents of the garage which made it a lot easier to organise the estate. Good service, friendly and helpful- would definitely recommend!
