This place is the pits. The staff treat customers atrociously. Customers are always ordered to get out of the way so the staff can move trolleys. The staff don't seem to recognise that they should either ask nicely or wait the 10 seconds it takes the customer to move to a different part of the aisle after they've got the item they want. This has just happened to me, I got out of the way as was ordered to do but then went to get a what I wanted from the aisle. The staff member tutted at me like I'd inconvenienced him in some way and then uttered something (presumably derogatory) in a language I don't understand. This type of thing has happened to me many times at this branch and looking at the other reviews I am one of many. I would strongly recommend that customers go to another branch.

I had a very upsetting and discriminatory experience at this Tesco Express (36–40 Barking Road, London E6 3BP) on 08/10/2025 between 18:30–19:30. I went to buy a bottle of beer, and the white female cashier asked for my ID, which I immediately provided in physical form. Despite my valid ID proving my age and identity, she refused to serve me and said she needed the ID of another person who had only been standing with me earlier and wasn’t buying anything. When I explained politely that I was the one making the purchase, she replied that “this is the rule” and still refused to serve me. When I asked for the manager, she called another colleague (an Asian male staff member) who said, “If she doesn’t want to serve you, there’s nothing I can do, you better leave.” Just before me, I saw the same cashier serve a white male customer alcohol without asking for any ID. It felt like I was targeted and humiliated purely because of my race. I even mentioned that I work at WHSmith and know the law for age-restricted products, if someone comes with a child, you don’t ask for the child’s ID; you check only the buyer’s. Still, she arrogantly said, “I won’t serve you, and you won’t be able to do anything.” Her behaviour was rude, unprofessional, and discriminatory. I’ve reported this to Tesco’s head office and attached her photo there for investigation. I hope the store management takes this seriously and ensures this never happens again.

The store staff and the security guy lock the doors 10 to 15 minutes before the store's actual closing time and REFUSE to let people come in and grab whatever they need to grab before it's actual closing time. I mean why say the store closes at 00.00am on your website when it actually closes at 23.45pm? This is the only store that does, because no other small Tesco Express like this i've ever been to has refused to let people in unless it's past closing time or already closing time. This is the only store where all the staff members seem to all know eachother and seem to be running their own little mafia rather than actually serving customers because there's barely anyone ever to be seen to ask help from and even when you do find somebody they seem to be chatting away with another staff member or too busy doing something else to even answer your query properly. TESCO NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THE OPERATIONS OF THIS STORE AND ENSURE THEY'RE FOLLOWING TESCO'S POLICIES AND RULES AND REGULATIONS RATHER THAN THE ONES THEY HAVE MADE UP THEMSELVES.

This place needs a clean up. It's not the best especially for an area that is changing with newly developing flats and houses. The clientele has professionals now moving into the area therefore the shop needs to be more inviting.

The negative reviews are unfortunate because this is a small and very busy store where the staff do the best they can. I’ve always found them helpful and friendly. They were terrific during the pandemic also. Give the poor staff a break or go work in a supermarket and see how you like the long hours and the rubbish pay!

Instead of pointless "Merry Christmas" on the windows (that no one cares about) why don't you put a note asking customers to switch off the engines while waiting in the car? The toxic fumes are a real health hazard and everytime I pass I can see a cloud of toxic combustion right outside Tesco. Please, rethink what you put on your windows and actually put something usuful.

Security guard stood watching me pay on the self checkout, watched me click "no receipt required", then still interrogated me at the door and accused me of shoplifting. I suggested we go to the cashier so they can pull the self service logs up, and he continued to insist to see the non existent receipt another 3 times before telling me never mind.
