This was our second visit to Kempton Steam Museum, and I highly recommend it! It’s definitely worth a visit, and we’re already looking forward to coming back again. Huge thanks to the dedicated team who keep this incredible piece of history running for everyone to enjoyβ€”both now and in the future.

We went on a day when the giant engine was being driven by steam and it was very impressive. A display of British engineering at the height of its powers in the early 20th century. The volunteer staff are friendly and informative. The coffee shop is first rate, too. It's good that you can access almost all areas. Very little is roped-off, and you can get right next to the enormous moving parts of the engine while it is running. Unique.

So this photo was a rather unexpected discovery in the Art Noveau/Art Deco building known as the Kempton Steam Museum. The photo is of a mother and her daughters dressed in their silken 1920's finery. I was on a photographic recce today with Ken and Peter preparing for a shoot in this building scheduled for the beginning of August when I espied this framed photograph. The museum preserves two of the largest steam engines ever built. The triple-expansion engines pumped drinking water into reservoirs for the supply of London from 1929 to 1980. Steam was provided by six boilers fuelled by moving-chain grates. The engines were named after Sir William Prescott, chairman of the Metropolitan Water Board, and his wife Lady Bessie Prescott - the lady who is seated in the photograph alongside her two daughters.

Try to go on one of the β€œsteam days” when they have the giant steam engines working. The engines are a similar type and size to those used in the titanic. There’s a nice cafe inside and places to sit. Lots of informative displays dotted about the place. There is plenty of parking. Buy tickets in advance for busier days. In the same area is the waterworks steam railway.

Fascinating and extremely large steam engines, Very knowledgeable guide took us round the engine and great to see one of them actually working.

If you're into steam, you'll absolutely love going. If you're not, they've got good cake and cups of tea and I'm sure you'll still learn something. Volunteers are exceptionally knowledgeable and really keen to engage. Check the website before going as they don't open many weekends of the year. You won't need more than an hour or two unless you also go on the steam train nearby.

Brilliant, fascinating, worth every penny of the entry fee. Quite staggering in scale and power whilst being engibeered to perfection, running vibration-free and remarkably quiet. Loved every moment of my visit!

Truly exceptional experience, a real hidden gem. Massive engineering in a cathedral-like building. First visited on one of their special steam weekends where they run one of the huge pumps. It was quite busy but still very accessible. I will definitely return on a quieter day for a more considered wonder around and to take time with photography.
