Great cultural venue. It's relatively on the shy side, if you compare it to the monumental cultural institution with which London is so rich. But we had a very interesting event here, specifically old Iranian movie screening, which says a lot about the institution. So check the program and highly recommended
Had a great time here at the Snapped Ankles (matinee) gig on Saturday. A decent sized venue for a gig. Excellent facilities. Very nice friendly, welcoming and helpful staff.
A hidden gem of an art and hot-desking space, just a few minutes' walk from Trafalgar Square! The WiFi is good, and there are quite a few power sockets and vacant seats. While it's often eerily quiet on weekdays, which is great for focusing, it can get quite busy in the evenings and at weekends (though it remains reasonably quiet). I find the evening buzz useful for perspective, as you can often overhear discussions about art, politics, and ethics, helping to balance apt-sudo's and other Linux niceties! The interior design is particularly interesting: it's very bare except for well-chosen and strategically placed sources of light, which create inviting, and otherworldly, corners in what might otherwise feel too clinical.
Beautiful venue. Overall very minimal display of art. But a great venue for small space presentations on art and related creative fields.
I had a great experience during my visit to the ICA. I watched a film in their screen one. The cinema was warm, the seats were comfortable, and the cinema screen were clean. The staff were friendly and helpful, providing excellent customer service. I like that they show a lot of independent films in their cinema.
When I walked in, they were changing displays. That happens. When I shared that I was an art teacher and was wondering if in their book store they had any books on contemporary art appropriate for children, I was told “no, we’re more of an intellectual institution”. I have been to many other contemporary art museums that are not such gatekeepers. As an art educator, with three degrees in higher education, I found that statement both insulting and ignorant. While not all art is appropriate for young viewers, children are very capable, and love discussing big ideas when viewing art. The humans at the desk also must not be aware what their bookstore offers (see photo.) I went in curious, and left disappointed and annoyed. Last, when I mentioned that I was currently teaching my young students about contemporary artist Bisa Butler, they showed no curiosity, and acted dismissive. Given Bisa Butler’s explosion on the contemporary art scene, an opportunity was missed by intellectuals. I strongly suggest that the ICA offer training to rectify the erroneous assumptions their staff has about 1) children and their ability to discuss big ideas in art; 2) the contents of their bookstore; 3) the public’s knowledge of contemporary art. I visited February 19th, 2023.
Great gallery with cinemas, a book shop and cafe. A real broad breadth of things on show and it’s located in a very easily accessible part of town by st James. Good vibes
I used to come here many years ago. I was glad to see it has only changed a little bit and only for the better. The exhibits (exploring sound interactively ) was interesting and I enjoyed the cafe. Will definitely go back soon.
Interesting, fairly hidden little gem on the Mall. Nice book shop and modern avant-garde art exhibitions, definitely worth a visit when walking by. Free to go in and there’s a cafe and toilet inside. Exhibits change from time to time but is always interesting if you’re into art and design…
Finally, I think my worries are put to sleep. Leave my art trajectory in the hands of The Institute. Nice cozy house for great films. Friendly faces all around, no pretentious knowing all and decor to the minimum; I do really appreciate it. Great location. Very much recommend.
