  1. On My Doorstep ★☆☆☆☆

Welcome to this beautiful magnificent edifice of anachronistic symbology set within't outskirts a' Barnsley tha' knows. You will be forgiven for being fooled into thinking that the quality of education offered is mirrored by this Georgian splendour. You won’t receive a classical education here; the course modules are drenched with postmodernist narratives and pseudo-theories masquerading as truth. Be aware...this college has an agenda...a political one, not an educational one. The limited range of courses are of the social sciences selection. Don’t try to get accurate start dates or specific info, as the admin are clueless; you will still be awaiting an answer on judgement day! Some of the courses then have to be cancelled due to lack of student numbers or poor organisation. On your first day you can’t help but take a magical mystery tour along the long hallways and landings. You will instantly notice the strange choice of ‘artwork’ which adorns the walls of fame where you rendezvous with Martin Luther King Jr, Mahatma Gandhi and U.S Olympic medalists sporting the black power fist. I mean, who were you expecting: the King of England, William Wilberforce or Winston Churchill, perhaps? As the beat goes on, more radical left-wing propaganda artwork is discovered in the classrooms and along the walls of the cascading grand staircase. After a few days, for anybody with an active brain cell on duty, the penny kind of drops. Yes, the propaganda displays are of globally ubiquitous Rebels pushing back at oppression, with the illusive white male ‘oppressor’ nowhere to be seen in the gallery. The locus of the pervasive rebel portraits remains exclusively reserved, out of public eye, in the altitudes of the learning edifice, inhabited by the naively unwitting students entranced by their Neo-Marxist technicians. You won’t find any conservative attitudes or patriotic viewpoints here; pseudo-scientific buzzwords like 'toxic masculinity', 'old white patriarchal men', 'institutional misogyny/racism' and 'hegemony' commonly go unfiltered in the classroom, harmonised with radical feminist, critical race, and social construction gender theories. Tory bashing is the norm delivered via Poweropoint slides and casual conversation courtesy of your tutor. It’s quite clear that most of the staff have managed to land their position via the unnatural, unmeritocratic selection of the diversity quota’s positive discrimination process. Quality tutors exist but not in abundance. Their vocabulary and general knowledge indicate that reading books isn’t their optimum pastime. Access courses demand an intense induction-ation where you will have D.E.I rammed so deep down your throat you will come home looking like a stick of rainbow rock with the word 'Woke' tattooed through your soul! On your way to the canteen in the hallway, you may find some anti- Reform fliers promoting the utter disgust and repulsion of the mere existence of Nigel Farage Christians, better keep a low profile; according to the administration, spreading the gospel is categorised as radicalisation and is reportable to the PREVENT team, which will be passed on to police aligned with the terrorism act! Ironically the beautiful old church on campus has been deconsecrated for secularised use in typical Iron Curtain style. Alternatively, the faithless ‘reflection room’ is awaiting you. As you nonchalantly peruse the college textbooks, the lexicon that dances to the tune of ‘Whiteness’ and ‘White Privilege’ unfolds before your eyes. Jacket spuds and chips get boring quickly; canteen food doesn't offer much protein. For athletes or anyone with nutritional awareness, bring your own food or a bag of Holland & Barrett vitamin boosters are a priority. Substance abusers in recovery, alcoholics, ex-convicts and neurodiverse students all cohabit the classroom along with conventional students with a career path in mind. This can be enriching or destructive to your learning; roll the die and see what happens...alternatively, give this place a wide berth.

When I first arrived at Northern College I didn’t conform to social norms. My behaviour was wild, and I was living with severe mental illnesses. I struggled to fit into any environment. At Northern, no one gave up on me. They saw the person behind the difficulties and helped me see that I was worth investing in. I've gone from not knowing 5+2 or the alphabet to gaining all distinctions in my Access to HE Diploma, and securing a place at my first choice university. Northern gave me the right support and saw potential in me that I couldn’t see in myself. They gave me the tools, patience, and positive belief. Slowly, I learned how to manage my illnesses, my social skills improved and I believed in my own abilities. This is proof that change is possible when you find the right place and the right people. You can rewrite your story with the help from the amazing humans at Northern College. With sincere gratitude, thanks again to Katie, Nick, Zoe, Claire, stu, Rachel, John and cintia.

This place is absolutely wonderful! I love it here and have studied multiple, short courses from creative writing, introduction to counselling, navigation for walkers and introduction to psychology. The courses are so varied. You can do one day courses or 2 days and stay overnight. The accommodation is basic but clean and adequate. The grounds are absolutely stunning and so vast! My mum who is 73 recently got her maths GCSE here by studying here and she also loved it. Highly recommend checking this place out.
