   customer service has been consistently disappointing. On two separate occasions, I was charged 10p for a flimsy plastic bag while other customers around me were not. When I politely questioned it, I was given inconsistent explanations and eventually told, “If you’re not happy, don’t come back.” There’s no sign displaying this bag charge, and the staff member was rude, dismissive, and unwilling to take feedback. I genuinely liked the food, but no one should be treated unfairly or made to feel unwelcome. Based on my experience and similar reviews from others, this place seriously lacks basic customer service.

   Hing Tai in Thornbury is an absolute treasure for anyone who loves delicious, freshly made Chinese food. Every time we order from here, we’re genuinely impressed by the consistent quality, the generous portion sizes, and the wonderful service. It’s clear that Hing Tai takes real pride in what they do. The menu offers a fantastic variety of dishes — from classic favourites to a few more unique options you don’t always see at every takeaway. The sweet and sour chicken is a real standout: perfectly crispy batter with tender, juicy chicken inside, all coated in a sauce that strikes the perfect balance between tangy and sweet without being overly heavy. Their special fried rice is packed full of prawns, roast pork, chicken, and vegetables, making it a meal in itself. We also love their beef with black bean sauce, where the beef is always tender, and the sauce is rich and full of authentic flavour. One of the things we really appreciate about Hing Tai is the freshness of the food. You can tell everything is cooked to order — the vegetables stay crunchy and vibrant, and nothing ever feels greasy or rushed. Even simple dishes like chow mein or satay chicken are full of thoughtful touches and well-balanced flavours. The prices are more than fair for the quality and quantity of food you get. You definitely feel like you’re getting excellent value for money, which can be rare these days! Plus, the portions are really generous — perfect for sharing or saving some for the next day. Customer service is another big plus here. The staff are always warm, polite, and genuinely welcoming, whether you’re calling in an order, popping in to pick up, or even just asking for recommendations. The shop itself is clean, tidy, and well-run, which always adds extra confidence when ordering takeaway. Parking is easy too, with spots nearby, making the whole experience hassle-free. In short, Hing Tai has become our go-to Chinese takeaway in Thornbury, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for authentic, delicious, and consistently high-quality Chinese food. Whether it’s a family treat, a quick dinner after work, or a big group order for a celebration, Hing Tai always delivers exactly what we’re looking for. Highly, highly recommended!

   Avoid. Tiny portion size for chow meins, half size. No egg in egg fried rice. Rude service. Ridiculous price for a small amount of food, smallest Chinese ever. Don't even give you free prawn crackers like every other chinese. Don't know how they are still trading. Worst experience, save your money and go elsewhere.

   Have only tried this place twice and I’ve been let down both times. The speed at which the order was completed by the time I paid and received my food was no more than 10 minutes, this normally is a good thing if the food is also good. However food isn’t up to standards of other places I’ve tried around Bristol. The rice was dry but edible. As for the chow mein it’s clear from the burnt noodles and pieces in the chow mein that the cook ware is past it’s sell by date and is burnt or the noodles are just being over cooked either of which are poor standards. The portions for the egg fried rice was a normal standard however the chow mein came in the same size container which I felt personally cheated by as normal chow meins are in large containers thus larger portions. All in all it was quick and edible but no where near that good old fashioned Chinese take away special night. Just to note the sign in the window that says phone orders only has been there since the pandemic and should be removed as in store orders are taken and I’ve never been told by staff otherwise. Customer service is moderate.

   We've just moved to the area so decided to give our local Chinese a try. Safe to say it'll be the last time too. - My chow mein tasted burnt. It was black and rather dry. - Pork curry was overpowered by salt - Rice was undercooked - Chicken Balls were undercooked £46 for food that was just chucked in the bin. It's a shame.
