I wish I could give a higher ranking, but unfortunately compared to how many lovely hostels exist at this moment in time, I feel that Castle Rock is falling a bit behind. The positives: All the lovely volunteers running the day to day actions were so very lovely and kind, and the location is unbeatable! The building itself is gorgeous, and so are the many lounges. The negatives: it is very old, the kitchen is a bit grimy and run down, the bathrooms are really not great, the rooms all have old carpet (that I doubt can be very clean) and the bedsheets have seen better days. I think for the price, they can do better. We stayed 3 nights total in a double room.

So fun! The showers were hot, the breakfast was delicious and vegan and I got it one or two days. Clean bed with a warm comforter. I came as a solo traveler and stayed for three nights, and the girls in my room were so sweet and friendly, and so was everyone I interacted with. I had such a great time, and the hostel has lots of events for solo travelers or for people to get to know each other, and everyone pays it forward by being friendly to the next person they meet. Castle Rock made my first solo trip incredibly enjoyable and I hope to be back soon!

FANTASTIC location. Great atmosphere and crew. Felt very welcoming and not having to pay for luggage storage after check out made it feel not money oriented if that makes sense. Sheets were soft and comfy. Rooms were creative and fun. Nothing bad to say.

This hostel was my first experience staying in a hostel in the UK three years ago, and it was amazing. The staff were really friendly and let me stay in the common areas after check-out while I waited for my bus. They also offered free milk, and the kitchen was large enough for me to cook a bit. Inside the room, all the lockers had keys! Itβs close to many attractions, you can visit lots of places just by walking 15 or 20 minutes. Furthermore, the hostel is really nicely decorated and has a charming medieval vibe.

This is by far the best hostel I have stayed in. The staff is super friendly, they have so many different events every night to get you to socialize with other travellers. When traveling and staying in hostels you don't always want to buy a whole bottle of oil or some salt and pepper, at Castle Rock they have tons of different spices, oil, free tea, coffee and even plant-based milk available for you to use! This is the first time I've stayed in a hostel with so many things. They have a super cozy movie room too. And a quite lounge where you can go chill in silence if that's what you prefer.

Fantastic hostel in an absolutely great location right next to Edinburgh castle. The hostel had a wide variety of visitors from multiple countries and ages ranged from 20's to 60's by my estimation. I had a large bag of laundry washed and folded delivered to my room for 5 pounds and a turn around time of less than 5 hours. The kitchen is huge and has everything you need and plenty of refrigerators for food storage and very clean. There were plenty of places to hang out and read or play games or just have a quiet read. The hostel is large but not loud or rowdy. There was some noise from the surrounding streets mostly coming from the bars with singing at closing time but for me this just added to the cultural experience. A lot of the staff seems to live and work there so this I think makes it a better hostel since it feels like they take good care of it and treat it like it is their home. I have traveled and been to a lot of hostels but this one is a stand out. Do not miss if visiting the fabulous city of Edinburgh. Also the staff was fantastic.

Great hostel! Affordable, even during the Festival and so close to the Royal Mile and all of the action of Edinburgh! I had a wee bit of a hard time finding the hostel initially, but once I did I was fine! The staff is friendly and helpful, and the main room is fun and active, and a great place to meet people if you want. Just to note if you are reading this review for research the bathroom is gender-neutral. I really liked it here and would definitely stay here the next time I am in Edinburgh!

Amazing hostel. On top of the building itself being gorgeous, full of great views and unique common spaces, the service from the staff is incredible. I felt so welcomed and when I found I had to stay an extra night due to travel complications, the staff were dedicated to helping me find lodging. I also did a pub crawl with the hostel (Thursday nights) and it was AMAZING! So many free shots, discounted drinks, new friends, and great memories!! Canβt recommend Castle Rock enough.

By far the best hostel in Edinburgh! Castle Rock immediately feels like a home away from home. The staff are fun, friendly and very accommodating. One of the best parts though, Edinburgh Castle is right across the road! The bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and common areas are always very clean and well-stocked. They have a full kitchen, dining room, lounge, theatre room, and more. In the lounge/dining room, there's even a ping pong table, pool table and board games! Every Thursday, there's a pub crawl that starts at the hostel... Do it, do it, do it! You'll have a great time! There's a laundry service on site. For Β£5 ($7.67 CAD), they wash, dry and fold your laundry, then leave it on your bed (closes at 6pm)

Lovely hostel! The rooms are very spacious, bathrooms are clean and the common areas are very cozy! Everything gets cleaned at least once a day. The organize activities every night, and I would highly suggest taking part in the Thursday pub crawl, best way to meet people! Kitchen is a bit small for everyone. Laundry service was only 5Β£ and super efficient. I had an amazing time there!
