   The Avoncliff Aqueduct carries the Kennet and Avon canal. It was built by John Rennie the elder and chief engineer John Thomas (grow up, it's a name like any other, stop your childish sniggering) between 1797 and 1801. It's Grade II listed and is 110 yards long. In 1919 the swans who carried the ships from Bradford-on-Avon Tithe Barn (see separate review on same) were retrained to pull water skiers ⛷️ along the canal. They had to fly extremely fast to avoid skier sinkage. This was discontinued in 1927 due to the frequency of collisions with barges on the canal.

   Cycle ride to Avon cliff Aqueduct from camping and caravan club site seemed via Bradford on Avon about 10 or 11 miles nice and flat along side the canal plenty of refreshments along the way .

   A classic piece of Victorian engineering carrying the Kennet and Avon Canal over the River Avon and the train line from Bath to Bradford on Avon. A beautiful structure in a wonderful location. Lots of paths and cycle tracks pass by as well as the canal. The cross guns pub is a classic visit with great food and drink.

   Awesome spectacle as this aqueduct spans both the river and railway line. Great piece of Victorian (?) engineering. Lovely view of it too from the Cross Guns pub's garden that drops down to the river level. Lots of outdoor tables & chairs there to enjoy the view.

   A beautiful place. We had walked the canal path from Bradford on Avon, nice and flat and lots of barges along the way. We'll worth a visit especially the aqueduct. Also a great tea room there.

   Great for a walk. I wouldn't recommend cycling there from either direction using a racing bike. I have a road bike and it's just about doable. Very rubbly surface. Lots of puddles and mud when wet. Heavy on the arms.

   Nice pub serving take away food due to covid 19, with outdoor seating spread over various locations on a steep slope, outside toilet block, a popular location for cyclists and walkers located close to the canal, cycle storage area, well worth a visit

   Stunning! And the Cross Guns is a great little venue for some good pub grub or even just a nice cold beer in the sunshine! There were some cows bathing in the waters on my last visit to the aqueduct! Love it here!
