Overall service and food was good however I booked in advance for 10 paying a deposit of 15 per head. Over a week in advance I advised them 2 of the party couldnt attend. I fully expected that the £30 would be taken off the bill as they had not prepped any food at this stage and they had ample notice. But no they took the £30 and charged full for the other guests. I think this is unreasonable considering the notice given. I wouldnt say anything if we had turned up on the night but they had in no way lost out by preparing food. Be warned if you book here if someone pulls out you will foot the bill.

We had our wedding at The River House in April 2025, and it was truly the wedding of our dreams! From our first enquiry, Sam and his team were incredibly responsive, helpful, and professional. After meeting Sam in person, it was immediately clear that this was the perfect venue for us. The River House is beautifully located on the river, with stunning surroundings that make for amazing photos - the marina, the footbridge, the public square, and the river itself all provided fantastic backdrops. The restaurant is elegant and spacious, with a glass-fronted bar that easily accommodated our DJ, dancefloor, and photobooth. We were able to use the space not only for our wedding breakfast but also for our ceremony, which made having the entire day in one location seamless and stress-free! It’s worth noting that Saturday weddings may not be possible, as this is the venue’s busiest day, and some special weekends (Easter, Bank Holidays, Mother’s/Father’s Day) may also be unavailable. When you book the venue for a private event, signs are put up to keep members of the public out, and the staff manage this politely and efficiently. Food and wine were extremely important to us, and The River House exceeded all expectations! We attended a tasting session months in advance, where we chose our wedding breakfast options and wine. The food on the day was INCREDIBLE, with a banquet-style service for 60 people delivered flawlessly. The evening buffet was generous and delicious, and even the house wines were top quality — Aby particularly loved Whispering Angel and M de Minuty. Sam was a brilliant point of contact throughout, coordinating perfectly with our other vendors, including One Splendid Day (florals and styling), Idyllic Weddings (photography and videography), and DJ Maddox. He managed our music, table plans, decor choices, and even ensured a guest with a severe nut allergy was catered for safely. Several guests didn’t drink alcohol, and our wine and non-alcoholic table selections were served perfectly. We also stayed in two of the Ice House apartments above the restaurant, which were ideal for getting ready and storing extra items. And the staff were outstanding — professional, fun, and attentive all day, helping everything run smoothly and even joining in the celebration with smiles and dancing. Choosing The River House was the best decision we made for our wedding. The combination of stunning surroundings, incredible food, flawless organisation, and a genuinely warm and professional team made our day unforgettable. If we could do it all again, we would choose The River House in a heartbeat.

This restaurant was so picturesque at night, made even more so by the lights and the surrounding water. I would say this is a perfect date night spot. It was virtually empty when we went but the service was immaculate. Although the food was presented beautifully, the flavours and textures didn’t wow me, however I would come again if I ever decide to revisit the city.

The food was deliciously rich and bursting with flavour and and the portions were more than generous. The waiters were very attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. I found the music in the bar to be a bit loud for my taste, and the floor was a little dirty in the restaurant, but overall it was wonderful. I’d definitely come here again!

My husband booked here for my birthday meal, high expectations as a number of friends had recommended this place for Sunday lunch. On arrival, we were told no booking had been made - and told we must have called the Scotland restaurant (even though we showed the lady 01792......). Anyway, was rectified by the manager who manages to sit all of us at a table. Food was lovely, really good. I went for the beef, as they'd run out of lamb. It was good, potatoes, Yorkshire, sauces all lovely. Started with calamari, to be honest had much better. Service was very slow, granted a busy day, but still really slow. Wait staff were amazing, couldn't do enough. Will definitely return, but not in a huge rush!

Got seated 25 minutes late and served 3 course meal with 1 hour then told they needed table so had 15 minutes left. Even though they came back 3 times to remind us not once did they bring us the bill!? Soon got the bill for us as we got up and started to walk out!

The River House is located in a really nice area right next to the river, where they seem to be doing some nice development work to make the area more appealing to visit as it is abit outside the main part of the city. There are plenty of places to park, but if it's a busy day or something is on in town, it may be difficult to park. Staff were lovely and professional, checking up on us frequently throughout the meal while also having good knowledge of ingredients that you were being served as part of the meal. Overall food was really nice. The highlight of my meal were the Mussels, which may just be the best Mussels I have had in a long time. They did not skimp on the portion size even for a starter, and they may have been the biggest Mussels I have ever had! Sadly, the Belly Pork put a downer on the meal for me with its rubbery texture and laxi of Veg with old rinkled Roasties. The Belly Pork should be crispy and believe it was sat around a while before being served. The Chocolate Fondant was really tasty with a lovely gooey centre, but I do wish it was a little bigger as I could have had two of them. I would visit again, but I'd probably try something for Sunday Lunch unless they can perfect the Belly Pork.

Food was fantastic. Had then chicken and it was out of the world. Service was very good. When you walk up to the restaurant the smells were beyond welcoming. Would come back any time and order the chicken dish I had any time. So good. Worth a stop and give it a try. This place is worth em anything they say this food they make is worth. Stop here and not be disappointed.

Booked the day before for our sons birthday meal with a £10/head deposit which is understandable these days. Turned up a few minutes early and we were seated almost right away. The table setting was lovely and although we were away from the window with the views, we were happy and were served our drinks. Although there was a draught Guinness pump on the bar, it wasn't available so made do with a can. Everyone else had what they wanted. The menu is relatively simple but professional and 'fine dining' looking. We ordered three starters to share between five of us and it was sufficient with the delicious garlic bread. I ordered the sirloin steak (photo) and one of my sons ordered the mushroom linguine (photo) whilst two had the burger which they both said was excellent and my wife had the hake dish which she said was delicious. She was particularly happy with the risotto with cockles which came with it. All in all a lovely evening. Not low-cost but certainly worth it for a celebration. Our server (forgot to ask his name) was very professional and always available. Thank you.

Fantastic food and excellent service! Couldn't fault it. Would highly recommend. Photos added of starter Florentine fishcake, main 12hour belly pork and dessert chocolate fondant.
