   Ordered some fish and chips via our nearby campsite who offers the service and was impressed with Monty’s reviews. They placed our order for us and spoke highly of them, but when it arrived there was a pool of oil in the bottom of the bag and it was all cold. The staff had just collected it and brought it straight back for us , so I understand this may be the delay that made it cold. However, the large chips was a normal tray size and the large fish was a weird shape meaning it was thin and really flat in comparison to normal chip chop fish and the peas were really bland. It was ok, but nothing to rave about and I don’t think we’ll order again.

   Take your time if you want your fish&chips from this place! It's so good what you get, that people come from far and a lot of people come to get a perfect prepared fish (or any other product). Just enough batter. No all too greasy. Still warm when you come home. Great curry sauce. Yummy mushy peas. You can sit and eat or as a take away. It's like a big (organised) backing machine. The staff is very friendly and even when busy in for a small chat. They are quick and don't mess about. Think in summer it would be great to get your fish&chips from here and sit on a bank on the market square. I had a lovely meal, that was great of taste. I surely come again (when i'm in town ).

   I have been going to Monty’s Fish and Chip Shop in Leek Market Square for over 15 years, and I can say with complete sincerity that it is one of the best fish and chip shops in the world. From the very first time I discovered Monty’s, I knew it was something special. The quality of the fish and chips is consistently exceptional—the fish is always unbelievably fresh, encased in perfectly crisp, golden batter that is never greasy. The chips are spot on every time: fluffy inside, just the right amount of crunch outside. Over the years, I’ve brought countless family members, friends, and even my students here. Every single person has agreed: these are the best fish and chips they’ve ever tasted. What makes Monty’s truly stand out is not just the food, but the genuine care and passion of the owner, Keith, who takes enormous pride in his restaurant. Whether you’re sitting down for a proper meal or grabbing a takeaway, you’re treated with warmth and excellent service. I’ve sampled fish and chips all over England—including many famous seaside spots—but nothing comes close to Monty’s. In my opinion, it is perfection in every way. If you try it yourself, I am certain you will not disagree. This place is a true gem, and I feel lucky to have enjoyed it for so many years. Highly recommended.

   We have visited this Chip Shop in the past, and it was always ok, however this time the food was not great, the fish smelt very fishy which would indicate it's not the freshest it could be, and it was soaking in oil and that was all you could taste. The oil it had been cooked in was clearly not hot enough as the batter was very soggy too, the sausage chips and curry sauce was ok. portion sizes were a tad on the smaller side my fish was supposed to be a large one and it was no bigger than a normal fish that is served elsewhere ! I am not a greedy person at all but I was very hungry so I ordered the large fish, and I left feeling hungry still. I suggest that the owner does some research and visits Murgatroyds up in Leeds and see what a Large fish actually looks like.

   Seems to have gone down bank. I moved to Leek in 2013 and honestly you couldn’t fault Monty’s at all until the past two years or so. Nowadays I find the food to be rather dry and small portions, and the staff just don’t seem as friendly and enthusiastic as before- they make me feel like a nuisance for ordering food a lot of the time. The one thing I can never fault from monty’s are the pies and puddings.

   At to give a 1star to get this to posted, if anyone wants gorgeous fish & chip, and a more then generous portion please try Emperors Court on West Street fresh haddock and home made chips very nice. it might be a Chinese but my god they fry a fish up. The thing is with Monty's there very mean portions. one portion from Emperors Court is plenty for 2 we have also had the burger in batter that's massive. Try it I've heard no end of people saying Montys as gone down hill and there right another thing his put a statement on his website blaming abusive customers for stopping the phone in service how professional is that and also to stop giving people the chance of having gluten free because of cost. Good old customer service.

   Filling and healthy portion of fish and chips. All fried separate from meat - been searching like crazy. All staff very helpful and friendly. Two large cod with three large chips fed five very hungry stomachs. All, not the stomachs, cooked fresh on order. Great value suggested by the older member of staff. The syrup pudding with custard highly recommended, but with cream just as delicious. They take bookings, so hoping to have our last supper Saturday night.
