The old white woman was rude and racist. When we came in she came over to me and told meI could not sit down before buying drinks despite us sitting down to try and work out what to order. I tried to ignore this and carry on having a good time. When we eventually decided she only asked me (a black man) for ID and not any of my friends (who are white). When I brought this inequality up she said it was irrelevant and refused to explain to me why only I was asked. She told me it was her pub and her choice who she asked. I am 29 years old and I definitely look of age. This is ridiculous and I will not be going back. I’m only giving one star because I am unable to give none.

We came in for a roast on Sunday (didn't use the rooms). Even though we were a little late for our booking the staff were friendly and accommodating. Food was lovely. They even brought some beef out for our chihuahua. We'll be back!

The bed was really comfortable and the room had everything I needed. The staff were incredible and so accommodating, breakfast was really tasty too (be aware you need to book it the evening before!). Only downside was that my room faced onto the pub garden which was loud until quite late and no earplugs were provided, otherwise everything was great!

We just went in to look at the menu and were deciding whether to eat there or not, as we were ideally looking for a breakfast. I asked if my 10 year old son could use the toilet whilst we were looking and the woman refused. She was rude, harsh and cannot believe she refused to let a child use the toilet. I would avoid this place at all costs, unprofessional, horrible atmosphere from the moment I walked in, from a very hostile woman. Clearly does not enjoy working with the public!

Got checked in... walked up to the room. Opened the door to a freshly painted room which resembled the size of a box. I turned and said to the member of staff how on earth can we stay in here..its stinks of paint, even when we opened windows still such a strong smell.. The floors and carpet were wet from eother the occupants the same day check out or from the painters.. who knows.. Didn't hear anymore regarding a change of room.. we got changed, went out and on return ,packed up and left the hotel,( not a hotel a shambles!!)..utter rubbish.. could also hear the next room deep in argue as everyone had their windows open.. Do not stay here!!

Location fab lots of buses and street parking, room was clean and staff friendly, water in bottles provided which was a really nice touch. Unfortunately it was st Patrick's day so the music didn't stop till midnight and then there was a fire alarm so we stood outside for 45 mins when we'd both just fallen asleep. Apart from that can't fault the place and will be back again.

The pub website didn't make it clear that there was no on site parking before booking. I would have booked somewhere else if I had known this. I stayed on a Friday night and the pub had a DJ playing loud music until 11PM which was loud enough upstairs to make the room vibrate. Punters chatting outside after 11PM were still loud enough to hear conversations in the room through the window. The bed was comfortable but the duvet had marks on it. There was litter behind the bedside table in the room. Wouldn't want to stay for more than one night and wouldn't recommend Fridays if you want to sleep before 11PM. Free water bottles were a nice touch though.

Shower was covered in mold. Bathroom door had the door handle snapped off, was incredibly sharp. None of the doors shut properly within the room. The bar was never open and after being shown to our room, no staff appeared to be available at all. Overall very disappointed and won't be staying again.

Good points included close proximity to my target destination (University of Brighton) which was 4 minutes drive by car, the room was clean and the shower was hot and the water plentiful. Things that could do with improvement included the tea/coffee making facilities which were minimal with very narrow selection (i.e. 2 x standard tea bags and 2 x standard coffee sachets with 3 x long life milk pods). The cup provided was paper and there was no spoon to stir it with. The toiletries provided were minimal with 2-3mm of shower gel and shampoo in the bottom of nearly empty 20ml containers. 2 towels were provided which was great, however they were damp and smelled very musty, so musty that the smell transferred onto your skin and hair after use. Only 1 pillow was provided and other than going down to the pub to ask the barman, there was no alternative way of asking for anything additional. The rooms are reported to be soundproofed, which is true with regards to any noise penetration from the pub below or the rooms adjacent, however not from the main road out front. If you are not used to sleeping near a road that remains busy throughout the night, this is sufficient to significantly disturb your sleep. Outside of my room at the front of the pub, there was a sign that remained lit through the night, scrolling continuously through a rainbow of colours. The white colour spectrum provided sufficient light to read by, despite blinds being drawn. Somewhere outside my window, water was dripping constantly throughout the night onto something plastic/metal - however this might not have been noticeable had I been able to sleep. There was no food available in the pub, but there was a take-away and a small local general store next door. On-street parking was available. In order to stay here again, I would make the following changes: eat before I arrive, request extra pillows when booking the room, bring my own towels, toiletries, coffee cup, sleep eye-mask and ear plugs. The close proximity to the university and a great hot shower still remain attractive attributes.

Loved my stay at RUBY! I was travelling alone, but was instantly welcomed by the staff and customers alike, as one of their own. The place had a real friendly vibe. Had a nice chat with barman who's name I didn't catch, sorry! But a really nice lad studying in Brighton. Also got to meet Laura, assistant manager and absolute legend!! She made me feel super welcome, as did Stuart and the other lovely bunch in there, who had me drinking and singing with them in no time! If you like a lively, friendly and upbeat, uninhibited pub vibe, then I'd definitely recommend a visit to RUBY. Awesome people and place!
