My partner and I visited the Jolly Brewer pub a few Sundays again. We liked the venue and the friendly bar staff. We popped our heads in to the Sea Shanty night which seemed fun. What really spoilt our visit was having to overhear two young men in the smoking area (who seem like regulars) using a very disparaging term to describe gay people - the first word started with F and the second with B. Later the one wearing a Burberry baseball cap made a public display of what might be described as mocking gay sex, in full view of the main bar. For a bar which is renowned for its inclusivity I do hope the manager has words with these people as it made us feel very uncomfortable and reluctant to return. In the UK's foremost gay city, this kind of behaviour is surprising, is clearly homophobic and unacceptable.

If you are looking for great craic, good beer and a great atmosphere, this may be the place for you. The live music is amazing, the general vibe is one of community and inclusivity and this is one of the best local pubs I've experienced in Brighton. There is an honest air of friendship and I have had some of the best spontaneous nights out amongst the regulars.

Worst pub quiz I’ve ever experienced. The quiz master started 30 minutes late, rambled on endlessly in between his regular tequila shots before deciding to take a 45 minute break after the first round. My group decided to leave as he seemed to have lost the questions and was far to drunk to conduct a quiz. I asked for our money back which he refused and got very hostile with me and swearing. Avoid at all costs!! Waste of my evening

The furniture might be basic and the carpet worn down to nothing in places, but these are the classic pub touches we’ve forgotten we miss, made all the more charming by their scarcity in a town where the pubs clamour to be uber-trendy. The staff behind the bar are just lovely. The pub attracts some characters and locals who use this pub as their social outlet. It’s a bit old school in that regard compared to lots of pubs in Brighton The Jolly Brewer Brighton are big advocates of local breweries and get in loads of options on cask and tap from names like Hand Brew Co, Abyss, Loud Shirt, Burning Sky and Only with Love. There are 3 pumps which offers some great variety on cask, plus 5 keg taps. Alongside that you have boxes of Seacider, Sussex Craft Cider.
