We had a wonderful meal yesterday for my MIL’s birthday. There were 12 of us and they seated us in their upstairs dinning/event space. We felt really special, private dinning. It’s a lovely, comfortable space, the staff were exceptional, the food great and we weren’t rushed at all, and enjoyed our time chatting and catching up after we had eaten. Would 100% recommend. Thank you!

We went to the Taste of Hampshire 5 course set taster menu on 4th Oct 2025. The spacing of tables was thoughtful & uncrowded. The food was delicious. Interesting & flavoursome without being too fussy. The food spoke for itself. The staff were attentive, well informed about the food being served & seemed to be enjoying the special evening. Thoroughly recommend any of these set menu evenings at the SJT Paul

We’ve visited the St James Tavern several times, both for romantic dinners and more casual lunches with family and friends, and it never disappoints. The food is consistently excellent – the Scotch eggs are among the best I’ve had in years, and the Sunday roasts are outstanding. Service is always personable and welcoming, whether it’s your first visit or you’re a regular. The atmosphere adapts beautifully: quiet and intimate at times, livelier when there’s entertainment. Live music is a regular feature, and it’s worth checking their website for events and offers (pie night is a favourite!). The bar is impressively stocked, with a wide range of drinks thanks to its free house status, including a great selection of local beers and ales. In addition to the cosy indoor dining and bar areas, there’s also a courtyard accessible from the bar or street – perfect for enjoying some sunshine with a drink and a good book. Overall, the St James Tavern is a place you’ll want to return to again and again. Whether it’s for a relaxed evening meal, Sunday lunch, drinks with friends, a quiet catch-up, or a lively night of music, it has something for everyone.

Absolutely brilliant service!! The Sunday roast was lovely; particularly the giant Yorkshire pudding. James had a great attitude and put so much effort into making our experience enjoyable.

Great local pub in Winchester. We were 4 adults and 1 child, and we had 2 burgers and 2 Sunday Roast. I had the burger and it was DELICIOUS!!! Friendly and polite staff as well, the atmosphere was cosy, the decor is really lovely. Well done St James Tavern!

In a city full of great pubs the SJT is amongst the best. Due to its location it can be a little quieter than some of the other city centre boozers but it's well worth the walk up the hill. A nice selection of seating and for a special occasion even has an upstairs dining room that you can book. Have eaten here a few times and the food is always great. Most recently visited on a Thursday, "burger night" and sampled the very tasty SJT Burger from the menu (picture attached). Good selection of beers and a wonderful place to meet with friends for a catch up.

A quirky rustic interior, with the various cosy seating/dining areas all on different levels. Works well as a place to eat and somewhere to meet for a drink. A good small selection of mains to cover a variety of tastes. All backed up with friendly service.

Just held a birthday/ get together here in the private room. Fabulous pub. You know when a great pub has that familiar feel when you walk through the door? That's St James Tavern. Ben was a dream to work with in the planning and the staff were terrific. In a sea of chain pubs or forgettable bars, St. James is a local pub to be treasured. Thanks Ben!

Just experienced my first Pie & Pint (or wine) at the SJT.. Lush!.. I know it's Wednesday and I should be watching the waist line but what the hell.. The Chicken, Ham & Leak pie is worth getting fat for, lovely Veg, Mash & Gravy.... Hmmm best plan that long walk in the morning.

Friendly welcome, well kept Wadworth ales, nice lunchtime sandwiches with chips and salad. Sausage was great on fresh brown bread. Clean and comfy with outdoor seating.
