Came for my birthday in August - Had the Porterhouse Steak which was cooked to perfection and tasted fabulous. We were regulars here when we were younger and nothing has changed over the years. Same great menu and great food. Has to be the best steaks in town.

Here is a real gem in Hull. family owned restaurant. The two sisters have been running the restaurant since their father started the restaurant. It is the best place to eat in Hull by far. It is very difficult to find in the middle of Hull, but what an experience, it is like moving back in time. The food, the atmosphere and the service are in a class of their own. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a unique experience on all parameters. thank you to everyone at Lanterne ❤️

I am really reluctant to write this review as this restaurant is a hidden gem. It was recommended to us by friends and when I called to book there was limited time slots available, I definitely recommend booking early to get a table. When we arrived we were a little concerned that we were in the right place, as there way in isn't well signposted but you can't get really lost. Walking into The Lantern really is like stepping into the past, we were seated in the bar area and someone took our drinks order and we were given a menu to peruse before our drinks arrived and we were asked if we were ready to order. We were left to enjoy our drinks in the bar area whilst our order was prepared. All around this seating area are photos of Whitefriargate throughout the years which is really interesting, especially seeing the old shops and what it was like before it became pedestrianised. When our food was ready we were shown to our table. We ordered a garlic bread starter to share and for our main course we ordered a sirloin steak and a porterhouse steak with fries, onion rings and cauliflower cheese as sides. We also ordered the garlic mushroom starter to come with our main course. The food was some of the most delicious food that I have eaten in a very long time. The steaks were cooked to perfection and melted in our mouths. The garlic mushrooms were the best I have ever tasted, all of the food was amazing. We were given the tip of sharing the sides because they are quite big portions and I am glad we did share because we couldn't eat dessert. These photos don't do the food the justice it deserves. The service at The Lantern was fabulous, the staff are so friendly, kind, patient and helpful. They really made the evening for us. My only criticism of The Lantern would be that we were cold . Our booking was for 6.30pm and I can imagine that as there is more people in the restaurant it will warm up, but take a jumper just in case. It certainly won't put us off coming again.

We visited the Lantern restaurant on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic meal and wonderful experience. We loved the original decor the Lantern boasts and we found out that it has been in the same family for nearly 60 years! The way in which guests are welcomed and the pride and care taken in the food served, you can really tell it's a family-run establishment. For our meal, we opted to start with the calamari and garlic mushrooms. Both of these were delicious, but we loved the mushrooms so much we had to order another portion! We then had a Porterhouse steak each, which were cooked to perfection. Alongside these we ordered the fries, onion rings and pepper sauce, which for us, were the ideal accompaniments. After these first two courses we were too full to try any of the desserts, but we imagine the options are just as tasty as everything else on the menu. Despite it being a very busy night, we couldn't fault the service we received. The servers were very attentive and ensured we were well looked after all evening - they really made us feel at home. We can't recommend the Lantern enough. Everyone should experience this hidden gem at least once. We'll certainly be back when we're next in the area!

The steak is amazing, the service is fabulous (proper silver service) and Nikki is a wonderful hostess! The décor is retro but clean and very serviceable. You walk down this little passage way in between two shops in Hull city centre and up some stairs, you'll probably think you can't possibly be in the right place but when you get to the top you'll be greeted by friendly staff and the sight of enormous, melt in the mouth steaks cooking in the kitchen. If you like good steak and big portions then definitely give it a go!

A fabulous old school dining experience which you just don't find in Hull these days. A really warm welcome, we were seated in the comfortable bar area for drinks whilst we perused the menu, we gave our order and then after a short period of time we were shown to our table. My two sons had sirloin steak each that were cooked to perfection, I had a fantastic porterhouse steak that was packed full of flavour and my parents both had sea bass. The vegetables do not come with the meal, but this means you can choose what you want, and with the meal being silver served, you decide on your portions. Our table ordered three desserts as two of our party were full. A rather nice end to a great meal. I used the gents bathroom as I believe if a restaurants toilets are clean, everywhere else will be clean and my theory holds true. The toilets were clean, hygienic and smelled fresh. There was a plentiful stock of hand soap and hand towels. This little restaurant is a gem of a find, and it can be quite easily overlooked when walking down Whitefriargate. This restaurant has been going for a good 60 years and so I would hope people go and support this local business so they can look forward to another 60 years in Hull

We had garlic mushrooms to start and grilled sirloin steak & fries and scampi provencale & fies plus a Greek salad. The food was excellent (the garlic mushrooms to die for!) and the customer service was impeccable, very personal and friendly. We would have had a dessert, there is a great selection, but we were too full... I highly recommend this lovely, family run restaurant in Whitefriargate, Hull. If you like great food and friendly service, this is the place to go!!
