We had a great meal at The Star Inn The City. The service was friendly and attentive, the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming, and the food was excellent across all three courses. Everything was well presented and full of flavour. A lovely place to eat and we would happily return.
First time visiting as we had been gifted a voucher but we'll definitely be back soon, can't actually believe we've not been before as the food was first class! The boar bourguignon pie special was spectacular and we let the chef know that the dish was excellent! The staff are really attentive and tended to us on a regular basis. The whole building is quite unique inside and was decorated for Christmas, providing a warm and cosy atmosphere. We'll be back soon!
We went here on a date night, the resturant was cosy and felt intimate. Our server was amazingly friendly and made polite conversation. The food was divine, we shared the truffle éclairs as a starter and both had the slow cooked ox cheek for mains, I had the toffee pop corn choux bun for dessert which was super tasty and my husband had the cheese board which he raved about. We also had a bottle of wine, for as starter, 2 mains and 2 desserts +wine the bill was £150 including a service charge which was really reasonable for the quality of the food and wine we both thoroughly enjoyed. We will definitely back on our next visit to York.
Wow. This was our first visit and won't be our last! The restaurant is beautiful, the staff are amazing and the food was perfect. We visited as two adults and two kids and the staff were fantastic with the kids, making them laugh and including them in the ordering process. The portions were extremely generous and every bring was fresh, hot and full of flavour. There honestly isn't a bad thing to say about this place, even the toilets are pretty!!
Been here several times and have never been disappointed. Latest visit was a Sunday evening for a family celebration. The place has a lovely interior and has views to the river and park and there's a great outside terrace overlooking the river. The menu is varied and has some really interesting dishes. Everything we ate was delicious and the venison was outstanding. Prices aren't cheap but good value for the quality/location. Highly recommended
We came here for an 80th Birthday breakfast celebration. There is a decently large car park not too far a walk from the restaurant, along the river which makes for a nice walk in pleasant weather. On arrival the entrance is through an arched tunnel which is quite fun, an outdoor seating area is on the left along with some outdoor rest rooms. Inside the layout is beautiful, upstairs are the toilets and a function area with the bar area laid out in front of you. On the right you have the large main interior seating area which is very aesthetically pleasing. There is a very large outdoor seating area overlooking the river which makes for a great setting in good weather. The staff were welcoming and friendly, we were quickly shown to our table with drinks provided. There is a decent selection of coffees, fruit juices and even some Virgin cocktails! The breakfast menu is wide in variety, the staff were very willing to allow us to make changes as well, there are also a number of side options should you wish to add ab extra sausage or baked beans etc. When the food eventually came it was amazing, all I would say is that service was quite slow…..we were bemoaning this a little but as stated the food when it came was excellent! Based on this experience I would certainly visit again and be happy to recommend it….I would advise to maybe expect a longer wait than you maybe used to…..but maybe that was a one off today? The staff were excellent throughout, no faulting them at all.
Great atmosphere during the summer. Food was beautifully plated but tasted average if not too salty. My sticky toffee pudding had a pretty presentation but the brownie was too dry and the toffee pudding too sweet. Mocktails were too sweet for me; tasted like it came out of some concentrated syrup cordial. Overall, food was very pricey for the quality. I felt I’ve paid too much just for my eyes to feast on the food. Check out the spring onion with roots in all its glory served with my halibut dish.
The former waterworks engine house at the rear of Lendal Hill House is a Grade II listed building and thankfully underwent a massive restoration from its poor state in 2013-14. The resulting restaurant occupies an imposing riverside location and is beautifully appointed, both inside and outside. Ate as a group of six on the riverside terrace and the food was excellent. Service was very friendly and attentive but a little slow at times. This was a Monday evening and so maybe they were a little busier than they had expected. Nevertheless, the quality of the food and the helpfulness of the staff warrants a 5-star review.
An absolutely incredible venue with lovely decor, amazing food and some of the most hospitable staff. This was our second time going to the Star Inn having visited several years ago, and we knew the quality of service they provide is top tier. This visit didn't disappoint, with prompt order taking, extremely friendly staff and plenty of advice on selection when needed. The drinks were as amazing as ever. We tried a range or cocktails and wine, all of which were extremely flavorful and a great addition to our evening. Trying out all 3 courses, we were most impressed with the starters and puddings - the standout dishes being the pressed Thrikleby duck which was very rich and meaty, and the sticky date pudding for dessert with a variety of sauces and ice cream that it paired extremely with! A slight let down for the meal were the mains. Having been told that our lamb would come medium rare, it turned up with very little colour. Whilst this didn't detract from how tasty the dish was, it was slightly disappointing. The Nose-to-Tail pork was also a little bit dry in certain selections. This was brought to the attention of the staff, who were very apologetic and accounted for this and made up for it. A minor disappointed but in no way did this change how amazing the rest of the evening was. Will definitely be returning in future as this a wonderful venue with so much character; I would highly recommend for a celebratory/lavish meal!
The restaurant is located on the North Side of the River Ouse, opposite the West wing wall of the bridge. See pics. Great location over looking the River with an outside area, but we were inside as was busy, tastefully set. The food, we had the halibut and lamb, was incredibly tasty. Compliments to the Chef as this really was a tour for taste buds. The subtlety of the fish dish where all the ingredients coming through was magnificent. The drinks took a bit a time coming out as it was a sunny day so was busy on the patio, but who cares when the food is this good.
