The open kitchen window and specials menu outside caught our attention at first. Not a lot of space inside but adds to the charm of this small family run place. I can't speak for the main menu (except the standard British Cantonese gelatinous soup that we got, average at best) HOWEVER I rdered from their today's special board a roast Malaysian chicken with an incredibly flavourful rice and a homemade chilli sauce/sambal and that was absolutely delicious, would recommend! My partner had a flat noodle seafood dish (keow teow?) from the main menu and really liked it, I did have a taste and again thought it wasn't bad. But honestly the special was so damn good, the chicken was insanely succulent and the rice was so well seasoned (it was like a garlicky buttery pilau type rice).

Manage expectation. This little restaurant offers a typical Malaysian 煮炒大排档 dai pai dong experience. The cleanliness, lighting and the plastic plates complete the feel. If you haven’t experienced it in Malaysia, then you might be disappointed. The wah tan hor 滑蛋河 and toast duck tasted authentic enough. Though the rice served together with the duck tasted way too plain. I wouldn’t mind going again if I just need to satisfy my Malaysian street food crave.

Avoid it at all costs! The food was incredibly terrible. We ordered three dishes, and every single one was disappointing. The rice tasted extremely cheap — like the kind you might get at a low-budget school lunch. All the meats from the three-combination menu were bland and unappetizing. The mapo tofu was unpleasant too. The sauce was nothing like authentic mapo tofu and tasted awful. And lastly, the hot & sour soup wasn’t even mixed properly, we were chewing on lumps of raw flour. And you know what? We told our Asian friend about the terrible Chinese food we had in South Kensington, and they knew exactly which restaurant we were talking about.

It’s cheap, it’s tasty and it’s filling. You can’t go wrong with oriental canteen. They have not much seats inside but on sunny days there are plenty of outdoor tables. All dishes come with rice and are around 12£-13£

Oriental Canteen is a small, casual Chinese restaurant in South Kensington. The restaurant has a few tables inside, as well as a few tables outside on the patio. The menu features a variety of Chinese dishes, including noodles, rice dishes, and stir-fries. I visited Oriental Canteen whilst visiting the local museums on a weekend. The restaurant was busy, but I was able to get a table without too much of a wait. The service was friendly and efficient. I ordered the crispy pork and rice dish which was nice for the price. Overall it's a nice place to grab a quick simple bite to eat to fill the belly in this busy area of town.

I have loved this little canteen for at least 20 years. Discovered it after a museum trip with a hungry small child and they were so happy to accommodate us and the food was so tasty, cheap and authentic! Nowadays the prices have gone up a little, but it is still a very economical place to go. I recommend sticking to the Chinese menu as the Malaysian dishes are less authentic, but they are delicious nonetheless. The staff are really friendly and the food arrives fast, so it's fine to under order and order more if needed. Portions are decent. Huge recommend.

We had roast duck with rice, roast pork with fried noodles and salty pork chop with rice. The foods are served warm. But the taste is definitely not comparable to Chinatown standard.

It is what it is. Average Chinese food at a good price. Freshly made milk tea was good. Beer at half the price of what you’d pay in Chinatown. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall experience. Friendly and clean. Pretty cool they still exist in London Zone 1.

Must try! this restaurant it’s hole on the wall but oh my my my… food here is fantastic reasonable priced and on top freshly made delicious multi Asian style menu fro. Chinese to Malaysian cuisine etc. If you look the Restaurent appearance from outside it’s small but packed with full of Delicious food. I ordered Singaporean noodle with shrooms plus hot and sour soup and Malaysian chicken curry with white rice.
