What a fine establishment. The rundown: broiled kidney is now one of my favorite dishes. Double points since we got to see Fergus. Everything else was delicious as well

At St. JOHN Bread and Wine, every dish reflects a profound respect for simplicity and quality. The meal began with refreshing lemon and mint drinks, perfectly chilled and delicately balanced—an ideal start that set a relaxed and inviting tone for the lunch. The fried calamari was crisp and golden, with a tender interior that spoke to careful cooking, elevated by the clean brightness of fresh lemon and a rich, velvety aioli. The salt cod with chickpeas showcased St. JOHN’s signature approach: honest ingredients, prepared with restraint and confidence. The fish was beautifully flaky, resting on a bed of chickpeas infused with olive oil, delivering an unpretentious yet deeply satisfying harmony of textures. The roast beef, impossibly tender and blushing pink, arrived with earthy beets and a generous dollop of horseradish—comforting, elegant, and rooted in classic British sensibilities. Dessert was a perfect finale: warm, freshly baked madeleines surrounding a scoop of ice cream. Their buttery aroma and delicately caramelized exterior captured the essence of indulgence without excess. St. JOHN Bread and Wine is a celebration of honest cooking—simple, soulful, and unforgettable.

Food was really creative and very tasty, but unfortunately we had a rather disappointing experience at St. John Bread and Wine the other evening. We didn’t get any introduction to how the menu works nor the specials of the day. Both of us were seated with our backs to the specials blackboard, so we had no idea there were other foods on offer until one of us went to the restroom later. The lack of explanation regarding the sharing style led us to: 1. each ordering our own starters and mains, 2. not realizing one of the starters was actually a snack (extra small portion), 3. receiving our dishes in rather funky orders. But I must admit, this one is partially on us, we were told that the dishes typically come as they become available and had the chance to have them served as starters and mains, but one of us said it was ok to follow the norm of the restaurant. Finally, our table was situated in front of some coat hooks by the entrance. Which meant that two of us had to get up several times during the meal to let others get their coats out. On top of that, the entrance door doesn’t close itself, so every time anyone entered or exited, the door was left open, allowing a strong cold draft to enter - cooling us and our food. That said, I am looking forward to returning and hopefully having a better experience next time.

First time at this location and I left just as pleased as I did Marylebone. The menu was just as good, but different. More options to choose from than could be consumed. Many standout flavors with all the basics nailed. Incredibly fresh and exciting ingredients all around. Friendly and helpful staff. We were fortunate to try the Knickerbocker Glory for dessert which was mind melting. They have baked goods for takeaway too! Would definitely recommend.

What an absolutely nice Restaurant this is; they have several restaurants in London but not all by the same name. By night a restaurant but by day also a bakery and a wine shop! The food is amazing, French-English modern styled and they are fantastic in Nose-to-Tail dining! The Restaurant we had dinner in, is located in Spitalfields opposite to the Church and Foodmarket. The place looks very authentic and minimalistic with brown chairs and tables and all white walls. Service is excellent, staff is very friendly & helpful. The menu changes daily and there are a few daily specials. We ordered the Cod’s Roe and Crab on Toast to start and were absolutely amazed by both. After we tried the Chicken and Ox Tongue Pie, quite heavy but also very delicious! Sadly we were too full for dessert but these looked very tasty too. They have a massive wine selection so surely you will find one that pairs well with your chosen dishes. We had been recommended this place by another restaurant in the neighbourhood and spontaneously went there on a Sunday evening late. We were very lucky to get a table without a reservation. Do make a reservation in advance. We would definitely visit again when we are in London.

Went twice in one week - menu had almost completely changed, which means the produce is absolutely fresh. My friend has been dreaming of the salt cod roe for the entire week, the bread is obviously fantastic, the venison was perfect (especially with a very well chosen red). The desserts are divine - we came after dinner on Friday night and got glasses of heavenly dessert wines to go with our date loaf (delectable) and apple crumble (surprisingly sharp). I would not regret coming back a third time in one week. Service is welcoming and knowledgeable. Decor is sleek and clean and minimalist. Great location.

No one can do what St. JOHN does as consistently well as JOHN does it. Everything is delicious, no matter what you choose. Make sure to make a reservation! It is priceless to have a place you can come back to in a beloved city that upholds the same high quality time and time again. It was a pleasure to bring my partner for his first time. We promised to come back before we leave for home. The chicken liver with brandied prune was my favorite. Our other small pick Smoked Cod's Roe, Egg and Cress was knockout. For large plates we dabbled with a vegetarian option. I was nervous as I ordered the Roast Squash, Sheep's Curd and Watercress, but “Wow!” This dish was perfect and satisfying. The duck leg was awesome! Less chive with the aioli might have been better, but a bold choice none the less. A note on beverages, the sidecar was amazing and perfectly balanced. Can’t wait to return many more times!

Great meal. Highlight for me was the smoked Cod's roe with egg. Salt Hake with baby gem also delicious. Great choice of wines by the glass. Buttermilk Pudding was my favourite pudding (we worked through four of them), make sure you get some freshly baked madelines too

Don’t come here expecting beautiful food… it’s quite rustic and simply plated, and in fact it was impossibly hard to take nice photos, but the food is delicious. Amazing toasts with chicken liver, and we snagged a specials of the day which was sea whelks with the most delicious herb garlic butter sauce. Found the mains to be a bit of a letdown though the little gems salad is amazing, but had the best bread and butter pudding to finish the meal perfectly. It’s served with clotted cream and a lovely caramel sauce.

Great food! Super lunch. We had a selection of 5 dishes and a dessert to share; possibly 4 would have been sufficient. The saddle of Rabbit and Ox Tongue were standout alongside the other wonderful dishes. The wine list matches the food in style with great pairing recommendations. The no-nonsense decoration somehow reinforces the importance of the food. You see the chefs in the kitchen calmly serving up divine dishes. The serving staff are knowledgeable and fun. There is good wheelchair access and space. Recommended.
