Brilliant little hidden spot. In good weather, the outside seating is a must. Modest and well-priced menu.

This is a great little coffee shop perfectly situated along the city wall, a welcome break as it was raining when we were walking around the city wall, The prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent. We took our drinks upstairs were it was loverly and warm, sat on a comfortable couch, such a relaxing chilled vibe. I would recommend this place and add it as a stop if your going to walk the city walls. I did not put a rating for the food as I did not have any.

I was very pleased to finally have the opportunity to visit Gatehouse Coffee earlier today. You can access from the pavement level or directly from the Walls. Inside it’s really interesting and quirky with the food and coffee on the first floor and some seating, but take the stone staircase to the next floor and there’s a wonderful room full of settees , tables and board games. Go up another level,if you dare, and you’ll find yourself on open air roof top terrace with fab views across the city. Cakes looked great, coffee was hot and full-bodied and the staff were very friendly.

When I came to York to meet my overseas friend, we had actually passed this place. Since then, I've often wondered what it was like. So, seeing as I was spending the day in York, I decided to take a walk to Gatehouse Coffee and try it out. Although it's not an overly big place, it's very quirky and worth a visit! There's some chairs inside, and then a number of tables and chairs outside, which is great when the weather is nice. The lady who served me was super pleasant, as was the two chaps in there too! Was nice to sit outside and relax for a while with a cappuccino. Would definitely come back here again, and a great stop-off if you're walking the York City Walls!

My family thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon at the Gatehouse. It’s in a charming, historic building with seating options inside and outside (lovely views). My husband and I both had the cheese and ham toasty, which we agree tasted delicious. My husband’s pour over coffee was perfect and I enjoyed my flat white. My daughter had the hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows, and she declared it to be the best cocoa of our trip…even better than the Dorchester! Also, the staff is friendly and kind. Now that we are satiated, we’re off to walk the city wall that the cafe is attached to.

It has a wonderfully unique experience being high on the walls with a somewhat medieval feel. Except everything feels incredibly current and the range of food and drink completely divine. I sat outside on the terrace and enjoyed the sunshine. The soup of the day was wonderful and a pot of tea was exactly what was needed. A perfect place for a pitstop on a walk of the walls or just if you happen to be in the Walmgate area.

It is amazing. The atmosphere is like you are going back in time. It is also warm but if you prefer to eat outside with a view you can eat on the top! The prices are very reasonable. Would highly recommend.

Unexpected find along the walls of York, with delicious coffee and a fabulous atmosphere. Climb up the stairs to the mid floor or into the roof. Team are welcoming and friendly - and the American head barista is exceptionally skilled.

Very iconic cafe in the heart of York. I loved their location and their decorations are fantastic. You can sit on the roof and enjoy the view from up there. Their coffee is so tasty and staff are so nice

Wonderful place to tuck in and study for classes. Wonderful Biscoff Brownie and warming coffee and teas in a cozy, historic setting. Over the course of 3-4 hours, had the vanilla latte, the London Fog, and the apple mint tea. Options to eat outside on the roof.
