I recently had to step in when my niece’s usual mechanic couldn’t fit her car in before her free MOT retest deadline. She drives a 2006 VW Polo, and with the clock ticking, she took it to this garage. They came back with a £1,200 quote to: • Replace a suspension coil spring • Fix a rear door that wouldn’t open • Replace the headlights • Fit new tyres A few things in that quote immediately raised red flags for me. Headlights – They told her the headlights needed replacing because they couldn’t “clean the inside.” That’s simply not true. If moisture or hazing gets inside, you can strip and clean them. It’s a bit fiddly and takes time to reseal properly, but it’s entirely doable. Saying it’s “impossible” tells me they either didn’t want to bother or wanted to upsell parts unnecessarily and make her pay more. Suspension coil spring – A coil spring for a Polo isn’t that expensive. The part itself is often £25–£70 depending on quality. Even with labour, you’re looking at roughly £120–£200 per spring, maybe, maybe £300–£400 if they do both on the same axle (which is good practice). If they quoted significantly more than that, they were padding the bill. Tyres – At £50ish each, that’s perfectly reasonable for budget or mid-range tyres. No complaints there. The door – They wanted £70 in labour just for “opening” a rear door that sometimes opens by itself anyway. They didn’t actually fix anything. They were charging for nothing, literally taking the piss. No written breakdown – I asked my daughter to get the quote in writing via email or text. They flat-out refused, because they “couldn’t be bothered to write it down”. Any reputable garage should be completely transparent with costs, especially when you’re talking over a grand’s worth of work. She then took the Polo to another mrhanic I trust. They said: “Let’s just do the MOT-critical repairs now, and deal with the rest later.” They charged £250, and the car passed. That’s almost £1,000 less than this garage wanted — and without unnecessary parts being replaced, or any upselling. I can’t say for 100% certan whether the first garage was deliberately taking advantage of her being 22 with her first car, but she was definitely definitely being misinformed, and the difference in cost and attitude speaks volumes. My advice: if you value honesty and transparency, look elsewhere. Always get a second opinion — especially if something doesn’t smell right in a quote. I’d hate for another girl like her to get taken advantage of.

I have had service work done by Guy and his team for a number of years. He happily took my new to me, Honda CRV hybrid in for a minor service. Service was prompt, full information via email invoice was detailed and easy to understand. Guy works hard for his business and is very local. No need to go anywhere else. Thanks Guy(s).

I've had ongoing issues with my Discovery Sport for a couple of months now. Guy and the friendly team have been fantastic helping me get to the bottom of the problem. We had to do a bit of trial and error to find the problem but each time I went back it was explained clearly what they are going to try next, what could have caused the problem and what they are going to do to try and fix it. Most garages would have given up but these guys kept going until it was fixed. Thanks

My wife booked a MOT here based on the good reviews. The person we dealt with was very rude, abrupt, charged ridiculous prices for minor works then tried to charge £25 for a MOT retest if we got the work done elsewhere. Clearly knew he’d be beaten on his astronomical prices. Other garage completed the work for less than half the price, would never use again.

I had our Volvo with the engine check light coming up for long time as our garage could not find the real cause of the fault. Reluctantly I took it to the local Volvo dealership and they confirmed it was related to the EGR valve. After spending £1500 the car wasn't fixed and so I decided to ask Guy for help. He immediately plugged his laptop on the car and offered me to take his courtesy car while he investigated further the faults appearing on screen. After few days of research on the potential causes and changing few parts, he finally fixed the car and for less money than we have already spent at the dealer. Guy was very helpful and honest to what the issues and cost would be and he even suggested the "cheaper" options first to save us some cash. Thank you Guy, we are super happy to have ended this saga of more than 4 months thanks to your great help!
