Reception all smoke & mirrors. Beautiful christmas tree, nice christmas decor. Thought ok this will be a nice 2 night stay. How wrong i was, had to swap rooms as ours was that hot with windows open that my lipstick was melting. Janitor called twice could not turn heating off. Advised us to ask reception to move us to another room. We were moved to another room & shabby does not come close. Bathroom had punch holes in walls, & the door had been kicked leaving a smash in door. Broken glass one side of bed & by headboard. Stains on radiator & side of toilet. Damp ceilings. Police were called first night due to an affray & were in reception. Buffett breakfast (paid extra for) was shocking, very cheap quality ingredients, eggs like hockey pucks, inedible. The entire hotel is rundown. Damp on corridor walls & ceilings. Tv was unwatchable due to constant crackling. Beds so uncomfortable, cheap thin mattresses. Back ache guaranteed. Avoid at all costs. Hostel would be cleaner & more comfy.

It’s always been on my bucket list to stay there I love old hotels full of character. I had a lovely stay and the staff were great. Yes, it was a bit noisy at night, but hey it’s located slap-bang in the middle of one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world. You have to savor the atmosphere. Thank you to the staff and management.

Amazing location. Good size rooms - ours was pretty modern. Price good too. Be aware that it's right in the v middle of the city, so it's V busy. I'm giving it fewer stars because of things like the breakfast having no veggie sausages/options (you can get a much better, much cheaper, veggie brekkie very near by if you can deal with Spoons). Also, stupid pay to use WiFi - this isn't the 2010s, it should be fast and free. But.. the staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms and bedding all v clean. I kinda hope they don't tart it up too much as it is affordable and such a great location.

I found the rooms clean and quiet. Looked like a fairly recent redecoration had been performed on the room. The furniture in it was cheap, but then this is a budget hotel. Rest of hotel was nice due to original grandeur of the hotel. Breakfast good, but found evening meal a bit lacking in choice. As my daughter said it reminded her of meals at primary school.

The room I got for a solo trip was quite nice and spacious. The only negatives about the room was that the shower glass had recently been replaced (or so I guess as there were still stickers on it that suggested those should've been removed after installing the glass) and that the closet door didn't want to stay shut. There was also a door connecting my room to the one next door. Despite the door being locked and shut, it didn't stop the noise from next door seeping through. As I didn't have the same issue with the people on the other side, I have reason to believe it was the connecting door that was contributing to it. Location wise it's very nice. Shopping centre is near, pubs on nearly every connecting street. Nearby walk to some lovely sights. The lounge from the hotel is also very nice and spacious.

The location and price are absolutely excellent. Its a very old hotel with lots of history too. The staff were friendly and are trying their best. However you get what you pay for. Due to its age the hotel is pretty run down. Our room was large but the beds were hard, there was no shower and the toilet was very hard to flush.

Staff are helpful and friendly even when busy, Food was reasonable. Room was clean and tidy if somewhat dated. Would have appreciated coffee tea milk and toilet paper being topped up daily, had to find a house maid and ask for top ups.

This hotel is cheap for a city centre, but you really get what you pay for. On entering the hotel, the front steps were soaking wet and slippy. Reception was very cold. Staff were not pleasant and didn't exactly rush to process the long queue. The lifts had carpet on the floors which was dirty and covered in cigarette burns. The rooms were large and sparsely furnished. Drawer was broken and the sink in the bedroom was covered over with perspex. The carpet was stained and also had burns on it. The bed was okay. We were wakened in the morning at 6.45 am with the noise of pipes clanging. The bathroom was freezing with the window half covered with a shower curtain!! The hot water was scalding from the tap. The bath enamel was all stained. The food was okay but there was always a long queue. They ran out of cups several times and people were carrying hot tea/coffee across the dining room in paper cups. Coffee was instant in sachets. Food was not replenished fast enough to keep up. They need to hire more staff!! The toilets in public areas were stinking of urine. We complained but they were still the same for days. It was advertised as having 3 bars. Only one was open and there was a long queue every time we went in. They served afternoon tea in a large, grand room just beyond reception, but it was too cold to sit in. The fitness suite and pool are also closed indefinitely. This may have been a lovely hotel in the past, but it certainly is not lovely now. Won't ever be back.

Incredible value for money. The staff did their best to be helpful but some of the systems don't work efficiently - lots of people had to get replacement key cards to get access to their rooms (me included). My room was big but the decor shabby. If the rooms were upgraded to the standards of the historic reception and lounges I would expect to be asked to stump up 10 times the money I paid. As things stand you get to stay in a historic and beautiful hotel in a slightly shabby, but large room (I suspect there are some better rooms too) for about 30 quid.
