The Bear hotel was an excellent place to stay overnight, using the December special Dinner, bed and breakfast offer it represented great value. Staff were exceptional providing support (carrying suitcase up the stairs) and warm friendly prompt service. Unfortunately they did not have any YOUNGS Ale on the night we stayed.

Great overnight stay here. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and personable. Nothing too much trouble. Assisted in securely parking our large trailer in their car park. Rooms spotlessly clean and well presented. Lovely and warm on a miserable dank December day and night. Super location with all amenities within a short stroll. Highly recommend

The room was equipped with fancy extras - tea and coffee, snack bar (chargeable), and free welcome biscuits. But… a little style over substance. There was a lot of traffic noise - the pub is on a traffic light junction - and noise from other rooms, including squeaky floorboards. The room was also very poorly lit with a vanity area that was unusable as a consequence. and only one bedside light. An unusable iron due to it having a sticky plate (tbf to staff, they did help to quickly locate a usable iron from another room, although it wasn’t until the fourth try that they found a clean one).

Fantastic stay at The Bear. Lovely warm welcome from all the staff, especially the manager. We had a delicious lunch before checking in. We were able to make use of the free parking on site. The room was clean and nicely styled. Nespresso coffee machine, toiletries, honesty bar with drinks and snacks including chilled items. Yummy continental breakfast included and hot options available too. My avocado and poached eggs on toast was very yummy! Would highly recommend a stay here. We were attending a Drone Art Show at Sandown Park Racecourse which was a few minutes walk away.

A Truly Wonderful Stay – Even with a Rocky Start What a fantastic experience from start to finish—even though our trip began on a difficult note. My wife was injured on the way to The Bear, and we couldn’t have been met with more kindness and care. The staff went above and beyond, and Tracy was an absolute gem—warm, genuine, and made us feel like we were staying with friends rather than in a hotel. This stay really highlighted the contrast with one of the sister hotels we visited, which lacked the same warmth and charm. It’s our second time at The Bear—we stayed last year, and although my wife was initially hesitant about staying in a pub setting, she ended up loving it so much that it topped her list for this year’s trip. We noticed several subtle improvements since our last visit—small touches that really add up and elevate the overall experience. It’s clear that care and attention to detail are a priority here. If we had one minor complaint, it would be the limited parking, but it’s a small trade-off for such a welcoming and comfortable stay. Top rated—we’d love to return again.

I love coming here after a walk and for special occasions. Fantastic food and service every time. We came for my boyfriends birthday in December and his mum loved it so much she wants to come for her birthday too! X

This is my Second visit with my partner, with our intention of celebrating the New Year Eve with Family, this trip was entirely based on the wonderful experience and staff professionalism and friendly attitude from our initial visit, the location is ideal, the decor and atmosphere has improved immeasurably, so our compliments to the Manager. On arrival the welcome was once again prompt, professional friendly efficient and a credit to the Bear Hotel.

Had a delicious meal at The Bear. The menu was full of familiar favourites with some playful twists. The only negative was the Lamb Scrumpet portion size. Could have done with two or three times the amount of lamb, which would have justified the cost of the dish. Otherwise, a lovely evening.

Just your average, most basic pub food with very, very glorified names in the menu. That’s it. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but an average burger is still an average burger, even if you try and dress it up with a slightly more sophisticated name. Chips were dripping in oil, most likely from frozen (it’s a 4 star hotel). Gravy watery and fatty and you’ll see very quickly that everything came from a pack straight out of the freezer. Inflated prices for stuff you’ll find literally anywhere. No thanks

The rooms are well appointed (even with the sloping floor) and it's great just having to walk up the starred after a few beers and a meal. The Chicken and Mushroom pie was fantastic. The welcome at reception (which is upstairs) could have been a bit warmer as we were greeted with a very quiet hello and no eye contact (the guy is obviously very shy but perhaps shouldn't be front of house) but not enough to spoil our short stay. Oh and the real fires were on too - lovely
