Both me and my husband have been toying with the idea of joining a gym for a couple of months, what has put both of us off is that initial feeling when you walk into the testosterone loaded weights area, not with the Nuffield at Wakefield, booked a walk round today and met Thomas, what a lovely guy, a great ambassador for the business, helpful and friendly, not in your face, explained everything really well and we were both really impressed, lovely clean site, great atmosphere in all of the spaces we were shown, tidy and well organised, plenty of parking and other staff that we spoke to were helpful. Thomas really enjoys what he does as it comes across when dealing with customers and future customers, we both signed up on the day, can't wait to get started, first impression goes a long way, can't wait to start. Thanks Karon and Andrew

It seems, in reading the rush of recent reviews and some past reviews that club staff are under pressure to get positive reviews for the club. I am sympathetic to this cause, many of the staff are friendly are regularly seen to be doing their best - as such, 5 stars. The mark of a lasting business in customer service is one that will learn from its shortcomings and actively listen to, and act on feedback from customers AND staff. I understand that a business needs money to operate, and I understand that raising member prices is often done reluctantly and by necessity. As other reviewers have mentioned, some things that a set of your members value have been taken away, business decisions that are necessary for continued operation may need better communication with your longstanding members. Consider offering a newsletter or some other practice in relation to club direction and the snagging list. I visit to relax, remove the some of the weight of the world and improve myself. Recently, every time I visit there is something wrong. Many of the machines I was looking to use out of action, the steam room - out of action or overcrowded. I keep to myself, but the changing rooms and steam room / sauna constantly have longstanding members complaining to other members about deteriorating facilities, removal of features (or staff), increase in prices and looking favourably at competing locations who will beat on price. Hard to switch off when this conversation is rampant, and they aren't wrong, I stay out of it, but I see more and more people swing this way as time goes on. The pool is massively valued among customers and of course with such an asset the business is going to leverage it to try and make money where possible, but the penny pinching adds up. Staff are clearly doing their best with what they are given, but sometimes it feels like they are between a rock and a hard place. 5* remains for now, I do hope that while management make the decisions they need to, that they find some way to communicate that with their customers on the direction of the club. Radio silence and stretching things thin is going to go one way. Hopefully the new members these reviews are desperate to encourage will allow the club to reinvest for the benefit of all members..

What truly sets this place apart, is the reception staff. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with warm smiles and genuine friendliness. They’re not just professional—they’re personable, attentive, and always willing to go the extra mile to help with bookings, questions, or just a quick chat that brightens your day. It’s clear they care about the members and take pride in creating a positive experience. I am sure the other staff are also a credit to the club, but rarely have the opportunity to interact. While I know the staff have kindly asked to be named in reviews, I prefer not to mention anyone personally as I value online anonymity and privacy. Just know that your efforts are truly appreciated!

Been going to this gym for over 20 years. Staff are, in the main, very helpful and friendly. Some of the gym equipment is tired and refurbishment of the changing rooms and showers are due. Cleaners do an excellent job of keeping the place clean. I’ve paid for personal training sessions to ensure what I’m doing is correct and would highly recommend Dan and Ryan. Overall a feel good gym and it’s real life testimony is that I’ve stayed here for over 20 years.

Having the jacuzzi’s turned off to save costs is ridiculous considering the cost of membership in comparison to other places. The jacuzzi was a large reason for attending given the benefits after working out.

Been at this gym 22 years since it opened. It has been going down hill year by year as you can see from the reviews and any feedback, from the endless surveys they send out, is paid lip service. JACUZZIS CLOSED FOR 6 MONTHS WITHOUT CONSULTATION FROM OCT 2022 WITHOUT NOTICE AND WITHOUT ANY REFUNDS OFFERED DESPITE A MATERIAL CHANGE IN SERVICES. This has been done so the club can save money on energy although they they pass it off as a benefit by telling members it allows us to keep using the sauna and steam. Lucky us! Here are the pros and cons Pros: slighlty longer open hours than Bannatynes or Total Fitness which are the 2 main competitors. If those were changed or a new gym like David Lloyd moved to this area Nuffield would have few members left. Cons: No investment for years. In 22 years its had 1 refit and the last one was 2nd hand machines.the machines are tired and 10 years overdue a refit. Its run by Nuffield which is a health company and they are too big to listen or make swift changes that benefit the members. If saunas or steam rooms break then they can take weeks and often months to get fixed. Any complaints the local manager just blames head office "therefore there is nothing they can do" and thats a standard reply for 5 years. Head office never reply or take any notice of any feedback in all the years Nuffield have run it. They make discount offers all the time of up to 50% off so you can easily end up paying twice what a new member pays and this is probably why the club has no money to run or improve its services so it justs keeps cutting services like turning off the hot jacuzzi spas and expecting members to put up with it. All these things are basic simple and easy to fix. When it was Greens gym and a much smaller operation it ran far far better with local members interests at heart instead of a big monopoly like Nuffield making crazy decisions from afar like shutting spas to save energy without offering any discounts to members for such a drop in services.

Tried to join the gym last night but Nuffield apparently don’t accept Starling Bank as a recognised payment, even tho Starling Bank is a UK recognised challenger bank with a banking licence since 2017. I also got told the discounted membership ended midnight last night (13th May). Just looked on the website and it’s actually till the 30th May! I was told someone will contact me first thing to discuss what options are available so I can join. Still no call so guess I’ll go elsewhere. Clearly my custom isn’t needed. From seeing the other reviews of the old gym equipment and sauna/steam room being closed weeks at a time then I’d say it’s a lucky escape as I’m not paying for something I can’t use or feel confident the equipment will work.

Poor Gym that are now charging a high fee. Machines are mainly broken and very old - some of the cardio machines are like going back to the 90's. The nuffield tier system is to blame as the higher tier gyms recieve the best equipment and the the old tat is passed onto this gym - bear I mind the membership is now £62 a month here though. No idea what planet these people are on to treat their loyal customers this way. The staff are OK but have no power to improve the situation - I feel sorry for them.
