Popped in for a cheeky drink after climbing Arthur's Seat. We were greeted by Craig who was very welcoming and showed us Skittle Alley where we tried our hand, a great bit of fun. The pub was established in 1360 and has a fabulous ambience. Do yourself a favour a seek this pub out ensuring you buy a drink or four!

Had our Works Christmas lunch here and we were very impressed. Great quality food, much of it "home made", proper turkey served, good sized portions for everything. Service was excellent as well. Will very likely go back here.

We stopped there at Sunday afternoon just for one beer because of historical value. However, Kamil, Craig, Martin, Harri, Archie were so amazing and helpful that we spend there alomst five hours. We had such a great time and experince. We also got a option to try historical skittle alley. It was such a fun. So we highly reccomend to vist this place. Thank you for everything Marika, Zuzana and Kateřina.

Excellent Sunday lunch. Good vibe, old and quaint. Had beef sirloin which was cooked beautifully pink. Good yorkshire pudding and BOTTOMLESS GRAVY!! Plenty of veg and some optional sides. Pudding options were good and we had after lunch cocktails which were well made. Server (Harry) was friendly and attentive. Forgot to take photos of lunch.

We stopped by the Sheep Heid Inn and it was one of those spots that just hits the mark. Tucked away in Duddingston Village, it's got that authentic old-pub vibe—think exposed stone walls, a roaring fire, and wooden beams that make you feel like you've stepped back in time. Claiming to be Edinburgh's oldest pub since 1360, it delivers on the history without feeling stuffy. Our server, Irena, was hands down the highlight! She welcomed us right away with a friendly chat, and her energy made the whole place feel welcoming. She shared some cool stories about the inn's past—like how it started as a rest stop for sheep drovers and got its quirky name from a carved sheep's head. It added a nice touch without dragging on. When it came to the menu, Irena nailed our picks. She suggested the fish and chips—crispy golden batter encasing flaky, fresh cod, with chunky chips and proper mushy peas on the side—and it was everything we hoped for in classic pub fare. We paired it with a couple of local ales, and everything came out hot and quick. As a bonus, she offered to take a few photos of us by the fireplace, which turned out great and captured the cozy mood. It was a relaxed, memorable meal that left us wanting to come back soon. If you're near Edinburgh, grab a table here and hope Irena's working—she makes all the difference. 5/5 highly recommend!

We had a lovely experience. The staff is so friendly, patient and involved. 10/10 would go back again. Lots of history, interesting to have a walk around and take a look at all the pictures and stories on the walls. Food was excellent. We had the baked Camembert, squid, haloumi fries and billionaire fries (late snacks/dinner) paired with some local ales. All delicious. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately not what it once was. Booking is via voicemail system and it was not made clear at time of booking that their pub license does not permit children after 9 pm. Our booking was for 7:30 and we arrived on time but it it took 30 minutes to place our food order and I had to get up and to find someone to do so. We were warned by the person who seated us to choose only two courses or we would overstay the 9 pm cutoff for the licensing. Not ideal. My food was okay, fish and chips but nothing spectacular. My mother had salmon which was small and she reported it was overly or weirdly spiced. The place is very charming looking with plenty of character but this was made less appealing by very loud pop music playing in the dining rooms. After eating our food quickly, we had to chase up getting the bill, after all that pressure to eat quickly. It was joyless and we did not tip. The manager seemed almost at the point of tears, for which I am sorry but at these prices, the service should be better and details matter. We would not have booked for 7:30 knowing service was so slow so that needed to be made clearer at booking. I used to love this place when it had amazing food and cheerful service and was a bit less pretentious.

First time at this Edinburgh institution and would recommend to all. We were a large party celebrating a milestone birthday and the day was perfect thanks to all the staff. From letting us access the table early to put out decorations to the fabulous servers who were so accommodating and took the best photo of the day. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. A good range of non-alcoholic drinks which is always appreciated. A real treat for us all, made perfect by such lovely, genuine service ❤

Had a lovely dinner here with the family. Food was great with such a great variety of dishes to choose from. Our server was polite and took any allergies seriously, making us feel very welcome and look after. Seated upstairs made for a lovely dining experience - we will be back for the skittle alley another day!
