   First thing to say is that Paul does very high quality work. He pays attention to detail, spots trouble before it happens, and is very quick to find an appointment time if you do have pain, and sorts it out effectively every time. Secondly, he is very gentle; he’ll tell you when he’s about to numb you up, but to be honest, that’s about the last you’re aware of it. He checks with you that you’re ok, and is careful to make sure your mouth isn’t open wide any longer than it needs to be. Thirdly, he and Michelle run a very effective and friendly practice; they made every effort to keep open as much as possible during lockdown whilst giving every confidence that they were doing all they could to keep their patients safe. And they still do. I can’t commend them highly enough nor thank them warmly enough for all their care and attention.

   I have had an extremely positive experience at Essential Dental Care. While a bit pricey (as with any private dentist), Dr Paul has always been very patient and happy to answer any questions I've had about my treatment. I also have to say that this is the first dental practice I asked about a partial denture who did not immediately try to upsell me to a dental implant. While I do need to eventually get the implant, it can be very costly and Dr Paul understood that I really just needed a cosmetic solution in the interim. Highly recommended.

   Well here’s my experience of this practice. I have given it 3 stars because yes treatments were painless and I was recommended some great mouthwash which has changed my life! And the hygienist was absolutely wonderful. But every time I went to see Dr Paul Au, he found fillings. For years and years, over a decade, before going to see him, I never had any fillings. Ok so maybe it was a weird period of my life. But the last time I saw him he found a filling he wanted to treat. I said I couldn’t afford it and he said it could wait a bit, with a pained look, but to come back in a couple of months. I left Edinburgh after that and 3 years later, having seen 3 different dentists over the years, no fillings! He also once made a mistake on a prescription I urgently needed and the pharmacist had to phone him to check what he meant to prescribe… so if I lived in Edinburgh still I wouldn’t see him. But I miss the hygienist so much!! Have never found a hygienist so caring and who cleans teeth so well and who is so careful not to cause pain (hope she still works there!)

   I've been a patient of Dr. Paul Au since moving to Edinburgh in 2017 and would highly recommend his practice. The quality of work and follow up care is second to none. On the rare occasion I had a problem with a filling, I was seen immediately by Dr. Au and had the issue rectified on the spot. Dr. Au also now offers the latest in dental cleaning (guided biofilm therapy) which I found much more comfortable than standard cleaning, and also very impressed with the results. Overall, I would highly recommend Essential Dental Care.
