I would not recommend staying at this place. If you are considering booking, make sure to read all of their policies carefully—they have strict rules that may cause issues, especially for tight bookings. For the price they charge, you can find much better private hotels in Edinburgh.

We were two people and stayed in a room on the top floor. The room was small and the bed uncomfortable, but everything was clean. The bathrooms were also clean, though the main issue was that there was no hot water on the top floor, so we had to go downstairs to take a shower. The water pressure wasn’t great either, but for the price we paid, it was acceptable. The location is okay.

Couldn’t recommend Argyle more! The room was cute & clean, bathrooms were updated, and the shared spaces were wonderful! Cozy, eclectic, communal! One of my best hostel stays to date!

My week long stay at Argyle backpackers was wonderful. The location is perfect, near the park, near the lovely St Andrews parish and for hikers; Arthur’s seat. For poor students like me, the pricing is very reasonable and the people seemed to be very generous with putting in free food. The staff were very friendly and reasonable.

Rooms not very clean, and asking for a towel (£2 only cash) was the most unpleasant experience as the receptionist was very disagreeable. Barely no pressure in the shower as well. The location is great though.

Lovely stay! So homely and a great base to explore Edinburgh from. Rooms were tidy and clean.

My friend and I stayed for one night. We were in a double room no.6 on top floor. only paid £50 for the night so wasn’t expecting much. The room was spacious enough with 2 windows, a sink a safe and drawers. Was quiet at night but walls very thin so very loud in morning. downsides(keep reading, it gets bad). In communal bathroom right next door to our room the same communal hand towel and shower mat/towel was there both days and had not been replaced. bathroom quite dirty. So when we washed our hands etc we definitely did not use the towel to dry our hands etc. when washing our faces in room, we had no towels to dry with. u would have thought they’d at least give u 1 towel for ur room.. if u have a sink in ur room. Someone else’s belongings were left/forgotten in our drawers. Staff wasn’t very hospitable. Very dead-pan/blunt/short. Just not very friendly. we felt like we were inconveniencing her just by being there. Worst part- when we stripped the bed in morning, and took pillow cases off to see on one of the pillows what I can only assume was a big vomit stain on it with black mould on/in the stain patch. I will attach a photo. Feeling very disgusted knowing that I had my head on that all night. absolutely vile. All I say is please check the bedding/pillows before u settle in ur room.

Absolutely terrible.. The worse hostel ever... I did not receive an email with the code to open the door. And when I arrived at 8pm I was I tried ringing the doorbell no one opened ...so I tried calling the phone number was "busy" after 30 minutes outside in cold dark.. some guy which was staying there...he opened the door for me ... I came to the reception and there was no one there.. Just paper....please ring the bell for assistant....so I pushed button again and again next 30 mins....phone ring in the room behind front desk....but again nobody came ....I was there already 1 hr ...no key for room..nothing... And like top....is not heating there in the rooms ....winter in the Scotland with no heater....tragedy.... I will file a complaint...

This hostel was unpleasant and dirty. First, we were given the wrong type of room : while we paid for a triple room (3 single beds), we were given a double room (a bunk bed and a bed). When we brought up the concerns, we were told that "we could go elsewhere". Second, the hostel was loud and it was hard to get a good night’s sleep. Finally, the hostel was filthy !!! Some bathrooms had no soap and/or toilet paper. The bathrooms had stains everywhere (as seen in the first picture). The kitchen was also filthy. Before we left, We had to take out the sheets and I was disgusted by the duvets who do not seemed to have been cleaned for years (as seen in the second picture). Thus, this hostel was the filthiest, most unpleasant place I have ever stayed at.

10 stars out of 5 stars! Definitely will come back to the warmest hostel ever in Edinburgh. Great traditional communal kitchen. Beautiful sunny garden. Dependable staffs. All the best for the Argyle Backpackers team!
