I stayed in a female only dorm room for 2 nights during the fridge. That going on made getting luggage there a bit more of a hassle but you can't beat that location. The staff was super friendly! The doom was nice, and the pod I was assigned was clean and had enough room. And was a great way to meet new friends. The food and drinks at the pub were great as well, and that amenity was so nice at a hostel. They provided towels for showers as well. I did have a tough time reaching the staff after I checked out. I had left my hiking boots behind and it was a hassle to see if they were found (they were). And sorting out a courier was another headache but i got my boots back. I would absolutely stay here again.

I don't usually go for hostels but the photos provided made it seem like I was booking more of a capsule hotel where the screen is at the end of the bed. I find those pods have a lot more privacy and are quieter than your entire side being exposed but was disappoint to find it was the curtain on the side style. One of the people sleeping in the same room as me had let me in so I didn't find out my code didn't work due to some sort of glitch until I woke up ~5am to go to the washroom. The staff were helpful setting me up with a new code. I had a very restless night, there was a woman in the room that sounded very sick and I didn't want to be sick so I checked out after the first night before 11am. The staff member I interacted with didn't seem very helpful. I didn't think I would be able to get a refund but I feel bad for the guests exposed to the woman's germs. It can't be easy having a cold or the flu in a hostel either. The towel rental situation seemed unclear, I ended up not taking a shower and was kind of stinky. Hair dryers you also have to borrow from reception which is up a few flights of stairs from where the bathrooms are. As a heads up they don't use the British plug in the pods, you are stuck with USB-C and USB-A, in some ways this is more convenient but certain laptops require higher wattage. The beds are fine, seemed like a cheap IKEA mattress or equivalent but I would have loved a second pillow. The hostel offers a walking tour, whisky tasting and other activities that sounded fun but I would have rather the basics been focused on before trying to add on extras.

First of all, the location is fantastic. It's right across from St. Giles Cathedral and is always crowded. As a woman, walking alone at night or early in the morning wasn't a problem. The rooms and restrooms are very clean. The bunk beds have curtains, like capsules, which is great for privacy. All the staff are very sweet and friendly. As a woman traveling alone, I felt very comfortable and safe. However, it's an expensive hostel. Not so budget-friendly. The cafe/restaurant part isn't exactly a common area, so you can't comfortably eat or drink what you buy from outside.

Good, centrally located hostel! The highlight was the staff, everyone I spoke to was very nice, welcoming, and eager to help. Some the nicest staff I've had in an hostel! I booked in a shared pod with 6 others, which was adequate. The mattress was comfortable and the curtain provides enough privacy. There are lockers in each room with an electronic lock that can fit a carry-on suitcase and a jacket. The bathrooms were clean, I had no problems. Only issue was with noise from outside, which is to be expected because of the central (but amazing) location and the old building. My room was on the first floor, facing the courtyard and even with the window closed the noise bleed through at night was significant. There is a restaurant and bar on the first floor, which you have to walk through to access the rooms. I got a bit lost trying to check in since the restaurant was packed and I didn't see the sign to check in, which is next to the bar. But you receive 15% off of certain food and drink if you're a guest. But overall, I would recommend for anyone looking for a wonderfully located and historical hostel. The prison theming throughout was neat.

Amazing value-for money. This hostel could not possibly be better situated as it is right in the heart of Edinburgh’s old town. Additionally, the bathrooms and bedrooms are super clean and the hostel staff was very kind and helpful. Also, bonus points for adherence to the theme of the original use of the building as a prison.

Convenient central location! The biggest advantage of this hostel is its location, just a new minutes from the Edinburgh castle, and its price. The room was tiny, but it was enough, the pod was surprisingly comfortable and everyone I'm the room was quiet and respectful. The bathrooms were always clean, the shower had space for changing and leaving your things which I appreciated a lot. You could also borrow a hairdryer at the reception but it was not always available and a towel for £2. The common area is quite small and sometimes there was no space to join in. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend it for a short stay in Edinburgh!

Everything about this hostel is amazing except the cleanliness of the bathrooms. Our room was set up very nicely with a shelf, hang bar, hooks, and 2 USB ports with lockers in room with pin code locks so you don't need your own. The staff was so helpful and kind! They have an on site laundry area you can tap to pay. This hostel has clearly been thought out from start to finish for being an amazing hostel. The only issue I had was the bathroom was very dirty and clearly not keep up with well. The things like inside the toilet bowl were clean but not the seat or around it. The sinks and showers were similar issues. Don't get me wrong I will 100% stay here next time I'm in Edinburgh. I just hope they step their game up on cleanliness standards in the bathroom.

Arguably the best hostel I've ever stayed at. Could not ask for a better location - (we were literal feet from St Giles Cathedral for the Queen's service).. easy walking to everything you could want from Arthur's Seat to Dean's Village. The pod style beds were perfect for introverts on a budget. And honestly, everyone was so respectful and quiet in the dorms. I stayed in 3 separate rooms over the course of a month and never encountered a single issue. Loved how friendly the staff were and how clean everything was! And who wouldn't love sleeping in such an historic building?! 10/10, will definitely be back.

A nice place to explore Edinburgh, both the town and the new town, with its central location in an extraordinary place. What's more, staff there are really helpful and work efficiently, e.g. when I asked for a change of the bed sheet, they responded quickly. I am pleased with my ten-day staying there. By the way, there's a tip for who want to do some cloth washing, go as early as you can to avoid a long time of waiting.
