Beautiful location but what a shame about the food. Firstly we were told that we couldn't have starters and mains and that all food would come out together (not ideal). We also found the whole setting to be quite grim. Dead flies, cobwebs and sticky tables. However, I did enjoy the lovely beer garden afterwards and enjoyed a few drinks sitting on the tables beside the river. Also went boating and that was a great deal of fun. Would visit for drinks but not for food.

Very enjoyable experience, food & drinks was lovely with the view and water adding a beautiful dynamic to the old school vibe of the building. Definitely recommend a visit!

The rural riverside setting is perfect for anyone who loves countryside walks or fancies hiring a rowing boat to explore the river. I was hiking solo on a multi-day trek from Brighton to Rochester when I came across the Anchor Inn. It was a warm early evening, and as I ordered a refreshing pint in the front bar, the landlord Simon (who had never met me before) immediately noticed my rucksack and said: “If you’re looking for somewhere to pitch your tent tonight, you’re very welcome to use the field behind the pub.” It was such a generous offer that I gladly accepted. I spent the evening enjoying a few pints in the company of Simon and his staff, who made me feel completely at home. I didn’t eat during my stay, though the food looked excellent, but I can vouch for a superb pint of Harvey’s Best Bitter. The following morning, as I was packing up at 8am, Simon even walked over with a cup of tea – an incredibly thoughtful gesture that summed up the hospitality I experienced here. I truly can’t thank Simon and his team enough. The Anchor Inn is a brilliant riverside pub, and I’ll definitely be returning with friends. Highly recommended!

Most gorgeous pub settle in the middle of the countryside, next to the river. Great food choices, and delicious. The boats are so reasonably priced too. Perfect day out for lunch, boats and drinks. Highly recommended.

Traditional country pub with a big beer garden and boats for hire. There's a decent range of beers, a decent selection of veggie options on the menu, and the service is fast. The boat hire is chaos though. No system for hires and returns. It's just a scrum. I think having an adult running the boat hire would be a better idea than the teenagers they use.

Nice spot for a chilled out beer or meal, little pricey though. Very nice garden area seating overlooking the river which you can hire a boat for looks like up to 5 people. Recommended

A beautiful pub in a beautiful setting. I came with a friend on a glorious Sunday lunchtime and enjoyed some lovely food whilst sitting on the benches watching the very well behaved dogs wander around. We then moved to enjoy an ice cream whilst sitting at the high bar looking out over the river. It felt like I was on holiday! It was fun to watch all the boaters come and go, especially when the English bulldog almost fell in the water, poor thing! I can't wait to return to this hidden gem!

One of my favourite places.Sitting beside the river with a drink and Sunday roast.Excellent roast chicken, crispy roast potatoes with herbs, good variety of vegetables and very tasty gravy.Very busy on a Sunday lunchtime, but got a table by the riverside and staff very efficient. The only negative is that the metal chairs weren't very comfortable so didn't stay as long as we had planned.

I had been wanting to visit this pub for some time, we picked a lovely sunny day and when we arrived there was not many people so we were able to get a table overlooking the river to enjoy our drinks, it's a very nice picturesque pub that serves food, plenty of parking and boat hire, we went for a short walk along the river bank after, enjoyable day.

A wonderful pub nestled away. Its very busy and popular but it's got beautiful views, a great boat rental and its chips are very popular. For a lovely day by or on an a river it's the place to come in this part of the south downs.
