Had a lovely family lunch here. The staff were really friendly and attentive and found a quiet spot for us away from the hustle and bustle (some of us have hearing issues). And the food was good, especially my mum’s baked Camembert and the apple and rhubarb crumble!
Nice beer. Lovely friendly locals. One of the staff borderline disinterested. Thought I’d try one of the special pies listed, but turns out they don’t actually make them here. Burger mediocre. Fries out of a freezer bag. Bun from tescos. Poor effort really. But would go back to drink if the bar lady would offer a smile and a warm welcome.
Service was very slow and had to ask for attention twice. They may have been short staffed tho and they were very helpful and pleasant when serving. The children's menu is rather limited but we've come across that in other similar pubs and it's probably not the best type of venue for young children. Much more geared to adults. It's a beautiful, historic building, similar to The Star and the Smugglers, which are both close by. Alfriston is a very popular village with a long history and many old buildings, situated very near the Cuckmere. It does have long, strong associations with smuggling in the 17th and 18th centuries, as do many places on the coast and near the rivers Ouse and Cuckmere, in East Sussex. We were a party of 4, 3 adults and one child, tge other adults really enjoyed their meals and tho all 3 of us adults had the same main dish of ribeye steak, mine was, unfortunately tough and could only eat about half. As it was a birthday meal, I did not want to spoil it by complaining. Just one of those things. There was a very pleasant atmosphere and it's a dog friendly pub. Please don't be put off as it's a lovely pub and the staff were very nice, just not enough of them that night and we were there early evening when they were changing from lunch to evening menus. It's possible more staff were there later.
I stayed in the George with my wife and my parents for 3 nights and had a great time. The rooms are "characterful" but what do you expect from a building which dates back to the 14th century. Both the room and suite we had were comfortable and clean. The food was excellent and even my Dad didn't complain which must be a first. The cook did a great job at breakfast and dinner. The pub is a great place to have a drink and let the world go away.
Food so good we ate there two days in a row. A dinner one day and a post-hike lunch the next. The bonus was eating in a listed building from the 14th century. Ambiance galore. The staff were incredibly friendly at both meals. The location couldn't be better for hiking on the South Downs Way, right at the spot where the hike meets the village. Gluten free fish and chips were on offer. The catch of the day was grilled to perfection. Great kudos we're given for their chicken and leek pie special.
Really nice pub, lots of places to sit and a massive garden - although lacking the view of the Six Bells just down the road. The rugby was on when we went for a drink so it was pretty busy but there was another room where they weren't showing it which I thought was a nice touch for those not interested in watching.
The family had a lunch here to celebrate a birthday. The food is excellent, there is clearly someone in the kitchen who knows what they are doing. Prices competitive and service pleasant, friendly and understanding to the whims of younger people. Highly recommended
We LOVE this pub and the whole team really went the extra mile to make a special occasion really perfect for us. The pub is gorgeous and the food is just perfect. We will be back time and time again!
Lovely old pub with great, friendly service. The food, sadly, is very hit and miss and we have eaten there a few times. The most recent visit I ordered the tuna steak and asked if it was served slightly pink in the middle, and this was confirmed. When it was served, it was so overcooked it was literally grey. Also, salads are overdressed to the point of swimming, often in very heavy balsamic vinegar. Desserts are good, but wish there was a cheeseboard. For me, a place for drinking rather than eating.
We called late they squeezed us in, brilliant welcome! Lovely old pub in lovely old village. Wonderful food, smoked salmon pate followed by pan fried duck and perfect banoffee pie. All servers were great, we started off with Haley who was lovely! Great place for drink, food, welcome and have rooms too!
