Special house has become a regular restaurant I visit thanks to the great Ramen and Rice bowls. Sometimes it does take a while to get food during peak hours.

We walked in and ordered salmon set and katsu don. Although service was a bit slow, food was very delicious!

Have eaten in store on two other separate occasions : service was excruciatingly slow and they managed to forget one of our orders making the wait even longer. Unfriendly service. Prices high for the poor quality and taste of food. Ordered takeaway. Chicken breast cutlet was too thin and dry.

Now as I do enjoy Japanese food. I thought I would get a take away from Special House. I got the Chicken Katsu Curry, takoyaki, and mixed tempura. I started with the tempura as fried foods can get soggy if left too long. Now the veggies included in mine were 1 large green bean. (Nice taste a little crunch in the bean and the coating was nice light and crispy) 1 mushroom (mushroom was quite watery however the coating was still crunchy) 2 sweet potato slices (these were my favourite of the vegetables the potato was sweet and soft and the tempura was light and crunchy) This is then followed by the seafood portion of the mix. First I had the 2 crab sticks. Now I like a crab stick once in a while. However I would have rather been given either 2 more vegetable pieces or 1 more Shrimp piece as these were too "fishy" I understand to keep costs low it sometimes pays to have a cheaper product but I wasn't a fan. Now the best part of any tempura in my honest opinion was the Shrimp. It was very nice. With a very good coating of batter and the dip provided added a nice flavorful bite. The crunchy tempura complimented it in such a way I wish I had more. Next I had the takoyaki. Not much can be said apart from at least they put bonito flakes on top? From the look and the amount one gets its already a given that they were frozen and cooked off to order. So they were standard. If you like takoyaki but not fussed in them not being freshly made then by all means go for it. Next was the miso soup that came with the chicken Katsu Curry. The temperature was good and still hot considering the time spent on eating the starters. The pieces of tofu was a pleasure as I am not used to getting tofu miso soup in England. The broth was settle and not too over powered. It was an overall nice break from the takoyaki. Finally the Chicken Katsu Curry. My first look is at the chicken. Sadly not coated in panko as one would hope. The chicken sadly also wasn't all that crispy either. Eating the chicken alone I noticed it wasn't seasoned. But probably mass produced chicken cooked from frozen. So kind of standard in order to keep the price lower. The rice was soft and a little sticky. Not quite what I was expecting for the base as if you eat with chopsticks it pays to have that extra stick so you can chow down. The curry is what grabbed my attention during this final part of the meal. It smelled pretty good, wasn't too spicy so even someone who likes a little zing in curries can enjoy this. Also, to my surprise this curry did somthing I had yet seen in a long time! It contained VEGETABLES!!. Nara being the only place I have seen do this, I am pleased to see another restaurant putting in vegetables into a dish that needed it. Once the curry was poured on the chicken and rice the meal was alright. Overall this place is alright. It's a little pricey but you get quite a bit of food for it so that kind of makes up for it. As much as I wished that some of the food was more hand made to order. I also understand that there is also a demand for food to be made quickly. Honestly if you believe in the quality of your food. People will wait so they can have the best. So to conclude. If you want Japanese but don't want to go to wagamama or Yo! Sushi. Give this place a try and see for yourself. Would I eat here again? Yea probably they do have quite a wide selection so I need to give that a try.
