    The security person followed us through EVERY AISLE all the way to the checkout kiosk and gave us a very insulting look. I saw more than one shoplifter that day, yet he didn’t do anything about them nor follow them. . This is harassment. This is not the first time, nor a one-time incident. It made us very uncomfortable. . Specific time was 28 November 2025 20:30-21:00

    My name is Don and Whilst paying for our shopping at around 21:00 at the self service check out, my son whose 13 years old tapped the overhead sign ahich made it swing. It caught attention and my son was mortified and apologised to me for what he did. Rebecca who I assume is a Duty Manager not wearing a uniform approached my son and sai “WHAT DID YOU DO THAT FOR?”, I apologised to her and said he is just into basketball and decided to tap the signage and then she left us at this stage. Whilst paying for our shopping, the check out counter asked for assistence 3 times and on the second one, she approached me and said “WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SCAN?” rudely. I told her its your check out counter as I was just trying to pay. On our way out, I waited for my son to go out and spoke to Rebecca, I asked her to be polite and not be rude when talking to customers. She said it was my son and I told her he apologised for it already. I pointed out how she talked to me rudely when the machine was asking for assistance. On my way out she said “CONTROL YOUR SON” and this was very inappropriate for a manager to speak to customers that way.

    Until yesterday, I don't think I have set foot in Sainsbury's Friar Street this century and I don't think I have ever bought anything there in 45 years. I had to check Google Maps to make sure it hasn't closed as there is a lot of redevelopment in the block from Friar Street to Reading station. I normally shop at ASDA Earley and Sainsbury's Winnersh, but I have been working in central Reading. The Friar Street store is a traditional 'proper' supermarket. Not a superstore or Local. From the outside it doesn't look particularly big, but it's a decent size because it goes back a long way and is an L-shape, with the wide part at the back. The prices and products on sale are largely the same as the superstores. I was shocked to see only one proper checkout, which wasn't staffed, so everyone had to use the self check-outs (Thursday morning 06.03.25). However a young Asian chap who works there helped by scanning my shopping for me.

    Good to have quick shop in big store at heart of town for groceries shopping and take a bus from there anywhere in Reading.

    I don't know why they have a mobile app for shopping, it is very useful, but I feel like I'm thef when some of the employees stay near me, and ask me why I haven't scanned my products. Educate your staff or end this service.

    Unacceptable behaviour by an employee at Sainsbury Friar street named BARBOR.I am Brazilian and went to buy a bottle of wine and when I showed my brazilian ID BARBOR said it’s not acceptable and he accepts only uk IDs. This comment was very racist as he also said an Indian was there previously and also turned down his I’d because of ethnicity. My friends ID wasn’t uk but he said because it’s European Union it’s acceptable. Ruined my day and felt discriminated as he was wrong and trying to film us without consent and screaming, very unprofessional. Disappointed!!

    I avoid it as much as I can! The shop is quite grim and sad looking and in need of renovation. Also the staff are not very friendly to say the least…there is a security guy who looks quite angry every time I’ve walked in there and it feels awkward as he stares me down. I’m sorry I’m there to do my shopping as a customer, there is no need to look so hostile - maybe some basic good manners training won’t hurt!
