We'd booked for 6.30 on Saturday and we're initially confused as the ground floor is a large and not particularly lovely bar. The stairs to the first floor restaurant were discovered and things got much better from thereon. The tables are well spaced, the ambience is pleasant and sufficiently lit, (I hate dark restaurants), the service was swift and friendly, but the star of the show, as it should be, was the food. My wife had the battered cod with chips and all the trimmings in very generous proportions. Delicious. I had one of my favourite dishes, beef cheek with mash and root veg. It was astonishingly good, probably the best I have eaten. The slow cooked cheek had more flavour than fillet steak and a texture that exactly hit the spot that makes this dish so unctuous. It was a huge portion and I savoured every mouthful. As an astonishing surprise we found that The Mariner restaurant was doing a buy one get one free promotion. This has to be our best ever value restaurant meal, but more than that was the quality of the food. Next time we're over in Co. Down we will definitely revisit this unbelievably good place.

Went here for Sunday lunch. Entered the bar and directed upstairs for food. It was around 2pm and I expected it to be busy but it was really quiet with only 1 other couple eating. Met right away and got seated and drinks ordered. A Sunday menu was on offer and ordered the soup, Turkey & Ham roast. Food and service was great and the portions are very healthily. Decided to squeeze a dessert in and ordered the pavlova. It tasted great but the presentation of it really lacked compared to the rest of courses and it was odd having it with a chocolate sauce instead of the raspberry coulis as advertised, but I ate it all up. I think with it being so quiet it really lacked any sort of atmosphere upstairs. I think I would’ve preferred sitting down in the bar area to eat. But overall a nice spot, lovely staff and the food is delicious.

WOW- food will blow your mind. Found this gem of a place on TripAdvisor and decided to give it a shot. It has pub vibes inside and pool tables upstairs. We were surprisingly shocked by how delicious the food was. The staff was absolutely delightful and so helpful and friendly. The seafood chowder, beef cheek, mussels and garlic potato cubes were absolutely drool worthy. We left full and very happy. We tried to make a return trip here in the two day trip we had- it just didn’t work out. Could have eaten every meal here. If you are in Newcastle this is a must go. Very easy to get to.

Our anniversary dinner last night at The Mariner and it was absolutely beautiful. I had the delicious Seafood Tagliatelle and it was cooked to perfection, my husband has the chicken stack. We were made to feel so welcome and we were so well looked after by the lovely staff who were so attentive and friendly. Thank you so much, great spot. We’ll be back.!

Food was reasonably priced and what you would expect for a pub. Chips were lovely. There is a fish and soup of the day as well as specials. The lady with dark hair who was on the bar/serving was lovely, gave great service and very accommodating, a real credit to the business.

We attended a recent tasting menu event prior to Christmas. We were very excited to see this sort of event in Newcastle as we spend more and more time here now. The chefs were extremely innovative and clearly had a passion for what they do. The service was excellent from the staff on the ground. However there was one issue which unfortunately really impacted the night and that was the wine and drinks service which we later found out was led by senior management/the owner. When we provided feedback on the event privately, that we were left feeling excluded and unable to purchase drinks in the restaurant, we were accused of being drunk and imagining the issue and the respondent actually appeared to find it quite funny despite the feedback being given with positive intent. The feedback was therefore not taken on board. I felt it was important to highlight this for other potential customers. If you aren't known to the restaurant, your experience might be quite different.

Absolutely would recommend! The vibe is very cozy yet classy. Our meals (beer battered cod and the pan-seared hake) were both delicious. We shared the soup of the day (white onion) which was also excellent. Service was great and price was reasonable.

Food was delicious and staff made us feel welcome. We paid less here than we did at restaurants down the way, and the food was much better! Highly recommend stopping in at the Mariner.
