Very thankful that the manager answered the phone outside of their work hours — without them, this situation wouldn’t have been resolved. I went into the store to return/exchange £90 earrings that were bought for me as a Christmas gift. When I opened them on Christmas morning, the earrings weren’t in a box and one of the stud bars was slightly bent, likely due to the lack of proper packaging. I assumed this wouldn’t be an issue and that they would simply be exchanged. I arrived on Boxing Day after Google stated the store was open 10–4, but unfortunately it was closed. We returned the following day and were initially greeted pleasantly, told an exchange would be fine, and given time to browse. Around five minutes later, I was told that company policy meant earrings could not be exchanged — which was surprising and frustrating, given I’d just been told the opposite. I explained that the earrings cost my partner £90 and had not been worn. While I understand hygiene policies, these earrings were visibly bent when gifted so I never attempted to put them in my ears. I asked to speak to a manager but was told they weren’t in and I’d need to return another day. Another staff member suggested calling the manager, which the first assistant then did. I again explained to the other assistant that the earrings were bent when gifted and had not been worn, but was told they couldn’t be exchanged because it is unhygienic if I’d worn them and they couldn’t guarantee I hadn’t. Thankfully, the manager agreed over the phone to allow an exchange. However, the first shop assistant described this as a “one-off,” which felt uncomfortable given the circumstances. I also questioned why a gift receipt would be provided if the item is non-exchangeable; I was told gift receipts are only for warranty purposes and that the policy was on display. I suggested customers should be clearly informed at the point of purchase — particularly men when buying earrings who may not know this information — this was misunderstood and a comment was made about gender stereotyping, to which I did not respond. Although I’m relieved the issue was resolved, the overall experience was unpleasant and unnecessarily upsetting for my partner who had made the original purchase. We were given a credit note and spent this immediately due to the tone and atmosphere, knowing we wouldn’t be keen to return to the store anytime soon. Huge thanks again to the manager for authorising the exchange over the phone. Unfortunately, the in-store experience and tone from staff really let things down.
