Squalid hovel inside but food, service and staff nice. Some of the mould on the curtains is older than me!

Where to start… We entered the restaurant at 6.30 and asked for a table for 2 people. The restaurant was half empty, but the owner told us they were full tonight and we couldn’t eat here as we didn’t have a reservation. The waiter didn’t seem to agree with him and was surprised by his answer. However take away was possible. We left, went for a drink next door, and actually came back at 7.30 to order for take away. The place was not more crowded. Came back again at 7.45 to pick up our food. The place was again as empty as when we first entered. And I said to my friend: it seems we would have had the time to eat considering no other people entered the restaurant to eat here in the last 1h15 window! Got our order but then heard from the owner that they don’t accept credit card - even though the credit card machine was just behind him and plugged in fine!!!! The ATM next door didn’t work and we had to walk 10 minutes to find the next one while our food was getting cold because we haven’t been warned before. All in all we still don’t know why we have been treated like we were. The owner is disrespectful and obviously had no shame lying in front of our face. Twice! Very odd to not welcome customers when your actually job is restaurant manager. There was 0 compassion from the owner. He was very cold and unfriendly to us all the way through. Absolute disgrace.

Excellent small restaurant in the old Formby schoolhouse. Great cooking of traditional dishes, with friendly service. One of the best features is consistency - you can rely on today's meal being just as good as you remember it previously.

Went on Tuesday evening, had an amazing meal. From the outside the place may look a bit iffy, but glad we didn't change our minds. Inside it's cosy and relaxing. Food was great, service was excellent, friendly atmosphere. Definitely recommended.

Came here for a birthday meal. Every dish took at least another half an hour after we finished the last and was bland and flavourless. I had a vegiterian dish with a spice rating of 4 yet due to the blandness of the dish, the heat was all that persisted. After speaking with the 7 other people I came with, only 2 enjoyed their meal (the two meat eaters) yet even they said it wasn't brilliant. The others all agreed that their dishes were all flavourless and either bland, or way too sweet. It's a shame too as the staff member we saw was lovely and helpful and the restaurant had a very nice, unique asthetic but the food was simply not up to par. I would not recommend Hilal Balti House at all.

Always a pleasure to eat in. Welcoming staff, exceptional choice on the menu, good selection of bottled beers and spirits. the furnishing are traditional which in my opinion adds character over other curry houses which are ''ultra modern'' which might as well be an Italian or Greek. One of the best curry houses in Merseyside.
