I had the pie of the day which was lamb and root vegetables and it was incredible. The pastry tasted buttery with a good crunch and the lamb was perfectly cooked. Probably one of the best pies I've ever had.
Stayed here for two nights in early December. A fantastic place, very warm welcome and cosy bar. Dog friendly. Our dinners were very good and they do a great breakfast too. Staff very lovely and helpful. This is an excellent spot from which to explore the Peak District.
Visited 08/11/25. Will not visit again and urge others to do the same. We are local to this establishment but haven't visited for a while. The Plough looks lovely from the curbside and is very appealing in a fantastic location for exploring the area. Unfortunately looks can be decieving. The restaurant is completely devoid of atmosphere and we were even seated at a sticky table. My partners burger wasn't cooked ( see photo) and we waited at least 20 minutes for someone to ask us if everything was okay despite someone walking past us to " bottle up" . The manager eventually arrived and told us he would speak to the " lads in the kitchen". Then asked if we'd wanted dessert. We eventually got a friendly member of staff to get our bill. The burger was deducted from our bill but no appearance from the manager and no explanation of the deduction. So poor food and poor service. Really a shame because there are so many other places that do good food in the area.
Went here with my family 8 of us in total and were really looking forward to a lovely meal. But it was far from lovely ordered our food and were left waiting nearly an hour and when it finally came all apart from one meal was cold barely warm and unedable the plates our food was on were stone cold the meat on the Sunday lunches was very fatty and under cooked the 1 roast potato was like a boiled potato and the veg was rock hard. 4 of us decided to send it back and when the replacement Sunday lunch came it was exactly the same luke warm and under cooked shocking so the food wasnt eaten . When we complained to the owner / manager he was unapolojetic and quite rude tbh . We will never go there again and would advise people to give it a miss its not cheap at £28 for Sunday lunch and was awful .
I would just like to leave a review of this lovely establishment. My partner and I stumbled upon this wonderful pub after walking from Hope to Hathersage alongside the River Derwent with our two dogs. We were welcomed by lovely friendly staff. The place itself is beautiful and fitting to its surroundings. We have eaten here 5 times now and the food and service is faultless. The crockery is warmed so the food is piping hot when served to your table and a good selection of food on the menu. Would definitely recommend and we will continue to visit. Thankyou.
Been recommending this place for about 20 years, but don't get back to it much. Glad to have done so today! Lovely place, big fire, well kept beer. The Pulled Ham Hock Croquette I could eat all day and the Fish Pie was perfect. Yorkshire Parkin Cheesecake and a Bailey's coffee to round it all off. Rest of our party loved their food as well. You can see why it has had an AA Rosette since 2000 and is always in the Good Pub Guide, Good Beer Guide etc. If we didn't live 150 miles away, we'd be here all the time! Consistently reassuringly delicious! Thank you.
Went for lunch with family. Staff were not particularly friendly and we had to wait quite a while for food. I had a vegetarian roast which was okay and it was presented very nicely. Three of us had the brownie cookie dough and all thought it was excellent.
Not a great menu if you want a lighter option vegetarian. Reluctantly chose a fish cake with coleslaw and a cooked mixed veg, but the fishcake was only the size of an egg with two drizzles of something else. Expensive at £9.99 for a starter, but way too tiny for a light bite main course. Nice environment to spend with friends and within walking distance from the cutlery museum, cafe and shop. Dog friendly in the restaurant, spacious and clean.
Felt like a truly authentic stay in the Peak District. We spent 3 nights here in the Shepherds Huts and it was very memorable - well-equipped cabins with bathrooms and wood fires, plus the staff and atmosphere of the pub itself was wonderful. Great food on offer either for the included breakfast or dinner. Overall a great base for exploring the area.
Just a one night stop over and a Great choice! Nice bedroom (room 1) situated in the main building, with very large double and all the bits you need, with a smallish but we'll equipped bathroom. The pub and restaurant was busy when we arrived but quietened down fairly early. Very enjoyable food then of to a good night's sleep. Breakfast, included in the price, was of very good with the full English using quality produce. We will stop again when passing through!
