Barnitts is a veritable treasure trove with a surprise round every corner of it's labyrinthine layout. Set across a multitude of shopfronts a stones throw from the hustle and bustle of King's square and nearby iconic shambles, Barnitts has something for everyone as long as they are in the market for homewares or similar. However, they did not have a quarter inch drive long reach Allen key set in stock on the 14th December, only offering 3/8 instead. I have forgiven this transgression and awarded 5 stars given their wide range of other goods and friendly amenable service.

In this store unfortunately encountered probably the rudest female sales assistant I’ve ever known! Can only suggest if staff are allowed to fiddle with stock whilst standing at a till, and that is their only function, then a sign is displayed saying “Closed to customers, do not speak to me. I will not answer your query or even look at you”. Fortunately her younger male colleague seemed to understand the value of potential paying customers. We made no purchase, needless to say, nor ever will again in this store.

I bought a lamp in this shop on Thursday. The lady who served me was really helpful . We had to.call back for it and the shop.was closing but a lovely man searched for the lamp and brought it out. It was very well wrapped which was great as we were catching the train . Great service

I wanted to share my recent experience at your store, as I believe feedback can be helpful for improvement. Unfortunately, I encountered some challenges with the customer service during my visit. I felt that the staff was not as knowledgeable or attentive as I had hoped, which was surprising for a family-run business known for its reputation. Additionally, I found the prices to be quite high, which has influenced my decision to shop elsewhere in the future. I appreciate the traditional service standards upheld by competitors like John Lewis and Waitrose, and I hope Barnitts can strive to enhance its customer service to match those expectations. Thank you for considering my feedback.

Absolutely fantastic ‘one stop shop’ with everything you could possibly imagine. A lovely gentleman explained the shop’s history to us. A really unique gem that you have to visit - we’ll definitely be back!

My gran wanted a toaster and kettle she found both and they where not the same make but they were the same colour black to match the kitchen the lady went to get them. They were very helpful and kind

Always such a great choice of products, just sells anything you need for home, kitchen, garden, interiors, lighting etc. I like spending with local businesses so Barnitts is my choice over supermakets for many items, including house cleaning, utensils etc.

Big thanks to Rob C. and the lads in the stores for helping make deliveries easy. Usually a difficult area to tackle in a HGV, but good folks make it a lot easier. Thanks!

Legendary shop in central York that stocks everything. Shoelaces in lots of different colours? They have them. Toilet brushes? Take your pick. Graters? Thirteen different types. Six different sorts of ice cream scoop. Four different kinds of oven thermometer. If it can be even loosely characterised as "hardware", "cookware", "DIY" or "thing you use around the house," Barnitts stock it.
