We popped in for a lunch as a family with two young children. It didn't look particularly busy inside but we were told that there was only space outside in the courtyard area. We sat down near a big heater to keep our children warm as it was chilly today. Ordered drinks and asked if it is possible to turn volume down a little bit as it was very loud. The waitress was very nice and said that it's ok she'll sort it. It was still blasting so I popped in and ask a lady at the bar if it possible to turn the volume a bit down. She didn't look very happy about it and said we need to change where we are sitting as we were too close to the speakers. I explained that we have settled in now and there is only us there and another couple (guy had his earbuds in) so surely noone would mind if the music will be not as loud. She said that she'll try. They've put Taylor Swift on but the volume stayed as loud. I popped in again and asked nicely again, and I was told that they've changed the music but can't do anything about the volume. We had to cancel our drink order and leave the place as it was simply impossible to stay and enjoy a meal there. Arguably, it was as loud on the other side of the courtyard as where we were sitting, so changing the table would not make much difference. 4 adults and 2 kids and we had to leave and find another place to eat. Maybe stonegate yard could think about technical capability of reducing the volume in the courtyard area or is it down to the staff that are happy to lose business over their volume commitments?

Waiting staff were really helpful. Main course was delicious steak cooked to perfection. Dessert let the rest down, this was a creme brulee which when it came was soggy on the top, not caramel, we asked the waitress to take it back to the chef and ask him to caramelise it, as it should be a hard Caramel on the top, she came back and said the chef had said "this is how we do it here" the custard was also very sloppy. Very disappointed in the reaction of the chef. I always thought that good customer service was key to successful business.

Fantastic food , service and atmosphere this is a great public house and restaurant for all occasions. Upstairs has a lovely warm seating area with a feel of ambiance. Has other areas to relax and eat or sit outside in a covered heated area. The food I had the French connection burger with two local butchers burgers and topped with a onion chutney and cheese. We also had the tuna sandwich with chips. A hidden gem in York and just a stone throw away from the minster and I review this place as 5/5

Popped in for a family meal on our son’s 16th and GCSE results day. The service and food were absolutely fantastic. Huge portions for the prices, definitely worth every penny.

Great restaurant serving up pub classics and a variety of other dishes from curries to BBQ chicken. We dinned here two nights in a row as we loved the variety of food on the menu and everything was consistently superb. The interior is much larger than expected, with plenty of seating. This would be a great spot for a date night or a dinner out with friends. Highly recommend the steak and ale pie, the portion is large and very tasty. The half chicken was another favorite as it had great sides, just found the chicken portion was quite small. If you’re in York, this restaurant is conveniently located in the heart of the city and worth the visit!

Nice place unfortunately only dog friendly in the courtyard may be ok in the summer but in December!!! The food was very good although the menu is limited, no fish dishes in the main courses on our visit. Prices were very good for the quality and quantity of food. shame they don't let dogs inside would have been a five star review.

Nice friendly staff, quick service, decent atmosphere (sadly we couldn't get a table outside where it looked really lovely in the sun), and excellent food. Would definitely go again.

We actually came across this hidden gem by accident, tucked away down an entry but we spotted the twinkly lights and were drawn in!It was nice and warm and cosy and we just fancied a nice dessert. Enjoyed a fabulous brownie and waffle ice cream concoction that was just gorgeous and hubby had a chocolate orange cheesecake. The staff were really helpful and pleasant and we would definitely visit again next time we’re in York

Whenever I am in York (not often these days) I enjoy a drink at this place. Reasonably priced for York and it does have one of the best courtyards for drinking in (when the weather is better). They do food too but have yet to eat here! Never heard anyone complain though. A nice little spot for a drink.
