A lovely place with a warm welcome. Some truly historic rooms in a very historic building. Buffet breakfast offered. Lots of interesting and quirky places to sit. Lovely garden. On a busy road. Ten pounds to park but plenty of free places nearby.
Okay the staff are great and very helpful. I don't like the parking fee ( just include it in the room price for guests, like it used to be, well it used to be free parking) The only issue I have with the place it it's looking tired. Please replace the carpets. Put some brighter lights in the rooms and it could do with sprucing up. Old sealant in bathrooms bad repairs to leaks.(All in the old building) It's a fabulous place and great history just make it 4/5 star again. Many thanks to the staff though.
When we arrived we weren't certain of how to pay for the car park so I went to reception to ask. There was no-one there and I waited a number of minutes. In the end I went into the kitchen to try to get some help. They clearly spoke to someone as eventually a member of staff flew through the door, nearly knocking me over followed by the receptionist who, frankly, needs some serious lessons in friendliness and customer service. Unbelievably rude and she obviously thought she was doing me a favour just talking to me. Got to our room to find it small and dirty. I know it was Halloween but I dont appreciate cobwebs everywhere. The shower was filthy - the cleaner had left their cleaning product behind when they had finished but clearly hadnt used it. There were only hand towels although I did find one bath towel shoved inside the wardrobe, presumably left by the previous guest. We went to the bar and walked through a pile of leaves inside the door on the internal doormat. The young girl couldnt open a tab for us as she didnt know how to use the till. At one point there were 5 young people behind the bar, not that any of them were serving ... too busy playing snap with the beer mats and doing stupid dances. They could have brushed the crisps and leaves off the floor! We ate in the restaurant. I say 'ate' - the food was so salty as to be inedible and we left most of it. The young man serving us had no clue how to take a cork out of the wine bottle and certainly didnt understand that customers generally like to taste the wine before they accept it. We had to educate him. We left before breakfast started so I cant comment on that. All in all, no stars for anything other than location are warranted and I would certainly never, ever stay there again. One of the worst experiences of my life.
Staying here was a wonderful experience. The staff is very kind and the service was great. What stood out the most though was the food. I was absolutely blown away by how delicious everything we ate was. Especially the beef French toast! We had it three times before we left. Next level good. Highly recommended this place.
Very disappointing all round. Main hotel is shabby and unloved. I dread to think how long the carpets have been down. Bedroom was satisfactory although we had to get the cleaner back to clean bathroom as there were hairs in the shower and wee and toilet roll in the toilet. It clearly hadn’t been cleaned. We went for a beer in the garden, but were moved on as the garden was apparently reserved for a wedding. We felt quite unwelcome !! Slept well in comfortable bed, but in the morning were faced with a most unpleasant experience. I can’t comment on the taste of the cooked breakfast as I didn’t eat any of it. My partner said edible at best. We are here for a 2nd night, but we are going somewhere else for breakfast tomorrow, which says everything !! Just got back from a lovely walk in the local area to be told by housekeeping that they won’t get to our room today. Just avoid The Talbot if you have any sense !!
We got married here. The venue is beautiful. Absolutely stunning. Everything else is what let’s it down. Menu tasting resulted in cold food three times. Promised hot food on our wedding day. Then cold food for me the bride. Wrong food for evening buffet served. Hannah was great at what she did and done the best she could. No fault of hers. The next morning we went down for breakfast to be told we couldn’t sit with our family and friends due a big party (OUR WEDDING GUESTS)Even though we had spent thousands the previous day. Breakfast mediocre Also have had afternoon tea here and wasn’t impressed at all. Such a shame the food lets it down.
The staff were excellent throughout. The food was good, too. Overall our room was fine but the shower fixture was very loose (reported to staff next morning) and there was no paint whatsoever on the outside of our window-frame. The accommodation block is some distance from reception, the bar and the restaurant, making for a chilly walk in late November.
Had such a lovely time away for two nights. Yes service is slow, yes the place needs a deep clean but for the price and value it was excellent. There are places that charge twice as much for less and The Talbot deserves praise. Well done.
I stayed here recently so this review covers the hotel, bar and restaurant. Firstly the hotel...oh dear...the only positive was that the room was large. Carpet was badly stained. Sheets had traces of mildew where they had been stored damp. I went to put some things in the wardrobe and it was full of housekeeping stuff. The shower heads were yuk, desperately need to be cleaned or replaced, etc, etc. - 2 stars Bar - was a bit lacking in atmosphere when we went in and only 1 ale pump was working. Otherwise ok - 3 stars. Restaurant - we sat in the conservatory section which had a nice atmosphere. Service was pleasant, if a little slow. We found the menu a bit uninspiring and ended up having pizza which was very good. Had a very good value bottle of wine. - 4 stars. So overall rating 3 stars.
