This is a site well maintained by volunteers and is an impressive Monument to the industrial revolution . Check the website and plan a visit on a day when it is in action. Quite something
Well worth a visit. The volunteers are very knowledgeable about the history and workings of the pump house. Check on-line for days when the pump is working (Bank holiday weekends mainly I think). Even when the pump is working, able to see all workings up close. Free to enter, donation boxes towards cost of coal. No facilities at the site but only a 5 minute walk along the canal from High Peak Junction where there are toilets, cafe and visitor information etc.
I’ve visited the Derwent Valley several times now, but yesterday was finally able to “tick off” this UNESCO site, as every time I have been in the area the pump house has been closed (due to it only being open a few days per year). I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the black smoke coming out of its chimney, and I quickly turned my car around and parked up so I could go and take a closer look! To my amazement it was free to visit and two big ovens being constantly filled with coal. If you get a chance to visit this is easily one of the highlights to this world heritage site, so be sure not to miss it!
Fantastic volunteers who are very knowledgeable. You can see when this place is 'in steam' by looking on their website and local information boards at Cromford. It is fantastic to see as you get the sights, sounds, smell of the beam engine and heat and fire of the boilers. Steps down from canal to visit and If you want, there are steep steps to get to top of beam engine. But if you aren't able it is still definitely worth a visit as you can adequately experience it all from the ground floor.
Fantastic place to visit. Lovely walk along the Cromford canal.
