Went here for dinner with my wife and daughters. They have a good selection on the menu which was good as my children can be fussy. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food and it was a busy place with a nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend coming for dinner. We did book our table in advance which I would recommend if you're going at a busy time.
What a fantastic pub! We popped in on a Friday night while holidaying in the area, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. The atmosphere was spot-on — lively enough to feel welcoming, but not so busy that you couldn’t relax. We even managed to get a lovely, comfy seat by the window where we could unwind and watch the world go by. The staff were brilliant from the moment we walked in. A special shout-out to Ross, who was absolutely outstanding. You can tell he genuinely loves what he does — friendly, attentive, and full of enthusiasm. His knowledge of the beers was second to none, and he took the time to guide us through what was available, helping us choose drinks that suited our tastes perfectly. It’s rare to find a pub that gets everything right, but this one really does. We’ll definitely return next time we’re in the area. Highly recommended!
The Merlin was the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The atmosphere was lively, the drinks were great, and the outdoor seating was a huge plus. Definitely recommend it for a relaxed evening out!
Popped in for a wee lunch and to see what the Merlin is like following the recent refit. It looks good, definitely been freshened up and the place is much better. Gent’s toilets has had total refurb at last and looks great. We had the lunch deal of a Chicken & bacon Ciabatta with chips & rocket, along with a drink. The Ciabatta could do with some chilli sauce or something on it as it was a bit dry and the rocket some dressing but for just under £10 each , nice.
Decided to pop in on my way home from work. The bar was very busy due to the football being on the televisions. However I still managed to get a seat. Got myself a pint of Bitter and Twisted ale. It went down nicely. So much so, I decided to get another. Served quickly by the friendly staff there. Nice atmosphere and a good place to watch sporting events. Might try the food next time when the bar is a little quieter.
I live across the road and I've mainly had good experiences here. Most of the staff are pleasant and pour a good pint of Guinness. Major problem is there rarely if ever are enough staff on duty and there never seems to be a good split between the staff who serve food and those who serve drink. Needs better management. Excellent pub to watch sport in.
Nice pub with a good atmosphere, definitely a place to visit to watch sport. Unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances the kitchen want available but the food menu seemed quite nice Decent range of beers with some craft beer options
The Merlin has changed over the years. It was at one time just a pub with a function room where weddings were celebrated. It is now more of a restaurant than a local. It has outdoor seating on both the street side and a garden at the rear. Its beer choice is much the same as most other pubs and is not all that exciting. The menu is also a normal pub menu with the usual choices. There are other good pubs in the Morningside area and it is a matter of taste which one is best. It seems to cater for sport lovers with some big screens located at different points. In short, it is a decent boozer.
